The reason the Lord continually commands us to give is so that we may continually enjoy the riches He has given us. Giving is one of the Lord's requirements.
The reason He commands us to keep giving is not because He is interested in our money, although that is of the least importance. The greatest reason is that He is looking for our love.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15
Giving, including tithes and offerings, is His command. When you obey it, you show that you love Him. When you do not obey Him, you do not love Him. Another reason is to show Him that we love Jesus more than money.
The rich young man did not understand this. If he had sold his possessions, given to the poor, and followed the Lord, he would not have lost anything. Instead, he would have received treasures that do not perish, treasures in heaven that he could enjoy forever (Matthew 19:16–30, Mark 10:17–31, Luke 18:18–30).
If you read the Bible, God Himself promised that when you give, you will receive. You do not have to worry about whether you will receive. Just believe His promise and obey His command. And you will not only receive, but it will be given to you in good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, with no room enough to contain it.
