“The death of Socrates, peacefully philosophizing with his friends, appears the most agreeable that could be wished for; that of Jesus, expiring in the midst of agonizing pains, abused, insulted, and accused by a whole nation, is the most horrible that could be feared. Socrates, in receiving the cup of poison, blessed the weep-ing executioner who administered it; but Jesus, in the midst of His tortures, prayed for His merciless tormen-tors. Yes! If the life and death of Socrates were those of a sage, the life and death of Jesus were those of a God.
Two Old Testament passages describe the death of Christ with remarkable comprehensiveness and ar-resting vividness. The first is Psalm 22, written over a thousand years before Christ; the second, Isaiah 53, penned 700 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Surely, this is one of the outstanding evidences of prophetic accuracy and infallibility. For those who know their Bible, there can be no doubt that the person described in this 53rd chapter of Isaiah is Jesus Christ. When the Ethiopian eu**ch inquired of Philip the evangelist as to whom the prophet Isaiah was referring, we read that "…Philip opened his mouth, and begin-ning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him" - Acts 8:35. So in this chapter we are confronted with the Man of Sorrows and the Christ of the cross (Isaiah 53).”

TEXT: MARK 15: 10

Socrates, the philosopher said it right – “Envy is the daughter of pride, the author of murder and reveng, the beginner of secret sedition, the perpetual tormentor of virtue. Envy is the filthy slime of the soul; a venom, a poison, a quicksilver, which consumed the flesh, and dries up the marrow of the bones.” J. Beaumont also noted that “envy, like the worm, never runs but to the fairest fruit: like a cunning bloodhound, it singles out the fattest deer in the flock. Abraham's riches were the Philistines' envy; and Jacob's blessing bred Esau's hatred.” Because of the instigation of envy in Cain’s heart, he slew his brother Abel and became the proto – murderer. Under the influence of envy that resulted to dark gloomy and revengeful spirit of King Saul plotted for years the slaughtered of David. When King Ahab of Israel and hus-band of a wicked Queen Jezebel, pined for the vineyard of Naboth, and because of envy got sick and murdered Naboth. The infatuated Caligula slew his brother because he was a handsome young man. Dionysius the tyrant out of envy, punished Philoxenius the musician, because he could sing, and Plato the philosopher, because he could dis-pute, better than himself. Cambyses killed his brother Smerdis because he could draw a stronger bow than himself or any of his party. It was envy that perpetrated that most atrocious crime ever planned in hell or executed on earth, on which the sun refused to look, and at which nature gave signs of abhorrence by the rending of the rocks - I mean the crucifixion of Christ; that, for envy, the Jews delivered our Lord. The sin of envy—one of the seven deadly sins mentioned in Scripture and became the outstanding “Crime of the Cross” – cf. Mark 15: 10. Envy is evil under every guise, but especially so when garbed with the vestments of pretentious piety. The fact that envy can and does pe*****te the boundaries of religious life should come as a salutary warning to every heart.

THE CENTRALITY OF CHRIST’S CROSS

Rene Lacoste, the world’s top tennis player in the late 1920s, won seven major singles titles during his career, including multiple victories at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the French Open. His friends called him “Le Crocodile,” an apt term for his tenacious play on the court. Lacoste accepted the nickname and had a tiny crocodile embroidered on his tennis blazers. When he added it to a line of shirts he designed, the symbol caught on. While thousands of people around the world wore “alligator shirts,” the emblem always had a deeper significance for Lacoste’s friends who knew its origin and meaning.

The cross, an emblem of Christianity, holds special meaning for every friend of Christ. Whenever we see a cross, it speaks to us of Christ’s tenacious determination to do His Father’s will by dying for us on Calvary. What a privilege to know Him and be included in His words to His disciples: “No longer do I call you servants...but I have called you friends” – John 15: 15. The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ is the outworking of God's redemptive purpose in time and in eternity. For this very reason the cross is central in God's Word as well as being central to God's world. In the Bible we find the message of the cross of Christ central in the Law, the Psalms, the Prophets, the Gospels, the Acts, the Epistles, and the Book of Revelation. To remove this recurring truth is to render the Bible meaningless. But the cross is also central to God's world. It was planted on a hill called Calvary in a land called Palestine. The cross is central in history, for the death of Christ divides human history and is the converging; point of two eternities. But, supremely, the cross of Christ is central to human experience, having an important relevance to the relationships of government and people, masters and servants, husbands and wives. A careful study of 1st Peter 2: 13 - 25 makes it obvious that without submission to the Christ of the cross there can be no hope of peace, harmony, or good will.

Apostle Peter gave us three important reasons for “The Centrality of the Cross”:
1. The Cross is God’s Standard for Men
2. The Cross is God’s Salvation for Men
3. The Cross is God’s Satisfaction for Men.

DIVINE LOVE IN ITS HIGHEST MANIFESTATION
1 John 4: 9, 10

It was in 1936, when King Edward VIII startled his British subjects and the world when he relinquished his throne for the sake of love, and marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. In a radio speech, the king declared: “You all know the reasons which you have impelled me to renounce the throne. But I want you to understand that in making up my mind I did not forget the country or the empire, which, as Prince of Wales and lately King. I have for twenty – five years tried to serve. But you must believe me when I tell you that I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.” Demoted as Duke of Windsor, he and his wife were shunned by the by the British royals. Only when he died in 1972 was the Duke honored again by his own country. A framed message in the Duke’s own writing was left for his beloved: “My friend, with thee to live alone, methinks were better than to own; A crown, a scepter and a throne.” What a powerful manifestation of love! It is a kind of love to death! This is the extent of human love, made sacred in the vow “till death do us part.” Indeed, death will part all human lovers.

There is another death that seals an eternal bond of love. The atoning death of Christ secures those in union with Him will never be separated from the love of God. There is no attribute of God more favored by the religious than that of His love. The love of God is the fountain, author, parent, and commander of love; it is the sum of his law and gospel. “In this was manifest the love of God towards us” - 1John 4:9. Towards us mortals and ungrateful rebels. “God commanded his love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” – Rom. 5: 8.
This love is so divine, and to study its highest manifestation, three important things to consider:
1. The Infinite Spring of Divine Love
2. The Marvelous Outflow of Divine Love; and 3. The Glorious End of Divine Love.

GOD'S WRATH: THE FORGOTTEN DOCTRINE

On August 24, the year CE 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. Being accustomed to the shaking of the earth, the people of the two cities at the foot of the volcano did not suspect anything unusual. It was too late for them to realize that the volcanic explosion would spew ashes that bury them alive. The explosion was witnessed by Pliny, the Elder. He reported that the ashes rose more than thirty kilometers high. The cities of Pompie and Herculaneum were buried by ashes, lava and mud.
The same is true of God's wrath. We live in a win-dow of mercy, but do not let the relative calm deceive you. Wrath is going to come suddenly upon the earth. Will you be ready? One of “God’s Attributes” is “His Wrath.” It may surprise us to find how frequently the Bible talks about the wrath of God. Yet if God loves all that is right and good, and all that conforms to His moral character, then it should not be surprising that He would hate everything that is opposed to His moral character. God’s wrath directed against sin is therefore closely related to God’s holiness and justice. Christi-anity today is in the state of spiritual amnesia. Most of the evangelical community has forgotten the doctrine of God’s Wrath. How often preachers proclaim to sinners the righteous indignation of God against the sinner. Even in the pulpits of the Christian churches, the subject of God’s Wrath is often neglect or almost forgotten. And we used to criticize pastors, who are honest and bold to preach on this subject and we judged them as narrow – minded, judgmental and fundamentalist. And some Christians feel as if they have to apologize for this subject. In Romans 1: 18 – 32, Paul is seeking to show why all men are in need of the gospel, and espe-cially why all men are in need of the divine righteousness that God has revealed in the gospel, and it is be-cause all men are under the wrath and condemnation of God – Rom. 1:18 - 3:20.
Three important things we need to consider in dealing with this subject:
(1.) The Nature of God’s Wrath – Rom. 1: 18.
(2.) The Revela-tion of God’s Wrath – Rom. 1: 18 – 23.
(3.) The Results of God’s Wrath – Rom. 1: 24 – 32.
