Offering of the Sword to Our Lady of Montserrat
Inspired by the example of St. Ignatius of Loyola
This week, our students participated in a meaningful tradition drawn from the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who, before beginning his pilgrimage, laid down his sword before Our Lady of Montserrat as a sign of conversion and surrender to God's will.
In this symbolic gesture, each pupil offered a "sword"—representing pride, self-centeredness, fear, or anything that separates them from God—and placed it at the feet of Our Lady. By doing so, they expressed a desire to live more fully in faith, humility, and generosity of spirit.
This ritual is a key moment in our students’ Ignatian formation. It reflects the heart of the Spiritual Exercises (SPEX): interior freedom, discernment, and a life lived for God’s greater glory.
Why Montserrat?
At the Benedictine shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat in Spain, Ignatius spent a night in vigil and laid down his sword, leaving behind his life as a soldier to become a pilgrim for Christ. This moment marked the beginning of his transformation.
Why the sword?
The sword symbolizes the inner battles we all face—ego, control, fear. To offer it is to choose peace, trust, and openness to God's calling.
This offering is more than a ceremony. It is a moment of personal commitment for our students as they begin to walk the path of reflection, service, and deepening faith in the Ignatian tradition.
Our Lady of Montserrat, pray for us.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, guide us.
