AUGUST 17, 1981 | THE MORNING INÂ WAS FOUND MISSING

Forty-five years ago today, Naga awoke to an unimaginable loss.

In the early morning of August 17, 1981, guard Tio Doming alerted Bishop Sofio Balce that the Original Image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia was missing from her shrine. Bishop Balce, together with Monsignor Juan R. Celzo, immediately rushed to the church and found Inâ’s pedestal empty. The protective grille behind the image had been forced open, and her Manto was later discovered abandoned in one of the empty tombs in the cemetery behind the Shrine.
The Archdiocese of Caceres records this as a defining moment in the history of the devotion.

The Church promptly mobilized efforts to recover the sacred image. With the September Peñafrancia festivities fast approaching, the devotees faced the painful possibility of holding the Traslación and Fluvial Procession without the Original Image. To allow the celebrations to continue, a replica was provided for the 1981 festivities by the family of Mrs. Felipe F. Cruz (née Angelita M. Almeda).

Even without the Original Image for the 1981 celebration, Inâ was never absent. Her maternal presence lived on in the hearts of the Bicolanos and countless devotees who continued to seek her comfort and intercession. In that time of longing, she remained a Mother who gathers, consoles, nurtures faith, and gently walks with her children as the Church grows under her loving care.

The story of Inâ’s eventual recovery will be remembered separately on its anniversary.
