: FORMER VATICAN SPOKESMAN: BENEDICT XVI IS READY TO MEET THE LORD | AUG 25, 2022

Former Vatican Spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, said the pope emeritus anticipates β€˜the definitive encounter’ with God.

The Jesuit priest made an observation in an interview with Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian bishops, on the occasion of his upcoming 80th birthday, which he will celebrate on Aug. 29.

In the interview, published Aug. 22, the priest, who was also provincial superior of the Italian Jesuits and director of the Vatican Television Center, recalled that he was able to accompany Benedict XVI β€œfor almost his entire pontificate, from 2006 until his resignation from the Petrine ministry in February of 2013.”

Father Lombardi stressed that Benedict XVI β€œis a scholarly man” and would define him as β€œa pope-theologian with very clear ideas.”

The Jesuit priest also said a great virtue of the pope emeritus is β€œhumility. In the conversations with me, he always spoke in Italian and not in German,” a language Father Lombardi learned when he studied theology in Frankfurt, where he was ordained in 1972.

Benedict only sometimes spoke in German, when he spoke with his secretary, Archbishop Georg GΓ€nswein, and, Father Lombardi said, β€œhe had the courtesy to repeat the same things in Italian,” although it was not necessary.

Father Lombardi shared the last time he was able to see Benedict XVI was β€œon May 7, to tell him the news about the award of the foundation dedicated to him.”

Benedict XVI, who turned 95 in April, β€œstill retains a formidable mental clarity,” according to Father Lombardi. β€œHe has a really remarkable memory and capacity to connect for his age.”

The Jesuit also said that after seeing Benedict XVI, he was left with β€œthe idea of a man who, despite his fragility, communicates serenity, thanks, I think, to an intense life of prayer.”

The priest added: β€œHe always says goodbye giving you a beautiful smile and feels ready for the definitive encounter with the Lord.”

St. Paschal Baylon

St. Paschal was born on May 24, 1540 at Torrehermosa, Aragon, Spain in a very poor family on the feast day Pasch of the Holy Ghost (Pentecost or Passover)and hence his name Paschal. His father was Martin Baylon and mother Elizabeth Jubera. He worked as a shepherd in his early age. When he was a shepherd, he used to carry a book and beg passerby to teach him the alphabet and to read. He then joined the Reformed Franciscan Order as a lay brother in 1564. He chose to live in poor monasteries. He worked as a cook and door keeper in the Friary due to his less education. He displayed deep love for the Blessed Sacrament. In France he preached against a Calvinist preacher, in the face of threat to his life, when he was journeying through France. He always defended the dogma of real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The dogma preaches that Jesus Christ continues His Eucharistic presence even in the consecrated Hosts, in the Sacred Particles that remain on the alter or in the Ciborium after the distribution of Holy Communion. St. Paschal lived a pious life and died on May 17, 1592.

He was beatified by pope Paul-V on October 29, 1618 and canonized by pope Alexander-III on October 16, 1690. Pope Leo-XIII declared St. Paschal the special heavenly protector of all Eucharistic Congresses and Associations. He is the patron of cooks, and shepherds.

The Blessed Mother Mary appeared to three children, one boy and two girls at Fatima in Portugal. They were Francisco Marto aged 9 years (born on June 11, 1908), Jacinta Marto aged 7 years (born on March 11, 1910) and Lucia Dos Santos aged 10 years (born on March 22, 1907). Virgin Mary appeared to these children in a location called Cova da Iria near Fatima first time on May 13, 1917. First they heard thunders and saw lightning. They thought that rain would come and tried to bring their cattle to safety. But they saw a very beautiful lady with light rays radiating from her body. Then Virgin Mary appeared to these children again on June 13, 1917 (the feast day of St. Antony of Padua), July 13, 1917, September 13, 1917 and on October 13, 1917 at Cova da Iria. After the apparition on July 13, 1917, the provincial administrator Artur Santos, fearing that the apparitions might create political disturbances, arrested the three children and put them in prison and tried to extract from the children about the secrets told by the Blessed Mary. So the children were in jail on August 13, 1917 when they were scheduled to meet Virgin Mary and they could not meet the Blessed mother Mary. But the crowd of people who gathered at the spot saw lightning and heard rumble of thunders in the clear sky and also they saw a cloud of beautiful shape hovered over the oak tree at the usual place of apparition. Lucia dos Santos told some of the story and but never told the secrets. They told the Administrator that they must get the concurrence from the Lady who told the secrets. So they were released and Mary appeared to these children on August 19, at a place called Valinos, a village near Fatima. At the last apparition on October 13, 1917 in the presence of about seventy thousand people, the miracle of the sun happened but the crowd could not see the Virgin Mary. The sun started to spin round like a wheel of fire radiating light rays in all sorts of colors. The people, the hills, the trees and everything in Fatima were radiating these colors at the same time. It appeared to the crowd that the sun was beginning to fall down from the sky and the people started to pray. But everything became normal within a few minutes. During these apparitions the Blessed Mother Mary asked the children and the people to recite Rosary. Blessed Mary also divulged three secrets to the children which were sent to the Holy Father without being read by others.

After these apparitions Francisco Marto died on April 4, 1919 and Jacinta Marto died on February 20, 1920. But Lucia Dos Santos entered into a convent in Pontevedra in Spain where Blessed Virgin Mary again appeared to Lucia on December 10, 1925. But Lucia was sent to the convent in Tuy, Spain. There also the Virgin Mother again appeared to Lucia on June 13, 1929 at the chapel of Dorotheas. Lucia Dos Santos also died on February 13, 2005.

The Holy See investigated the apparitions and approved it as true in October 1930 by pope Pius-XI. More over Francisco Marto and Jacinto Marto were beatified by Pope John Paul-II on May 13, 2000.
