The Ateneo de Naga University community mourns the passing of Fr. Francisco "Paco" A. Mallari, SJ.
Fr. Paco entered the Society of Jesus in 1951 and was ordained to the Priesthood in 1964.
From 1971 to 1985, he was assigned here at the Ateneo de Naga University where he served as teacher, confessor, writer, and department chair. He took his final vows on 15 August 1976 at the Ateneo de Naga Chapel.
Although he was assigned to Ateneo de Cagayan in 1985, he was re-assigned back to Naga in 2006, serving as part of the college chaplaincy and pastoral ministry, and served as confessor for the Missionary Order of Brothers of the Poor. He also continued his role as teacher in college. In 2021, Fr Paco was assigned to Ateneo de Manila University, where he stayed at the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center.
Fr. Paco was a scholarly writer and an erudite historian. Aside from studying history at the Universidad Ibero-Americana (Mexico) and earning his MA in History at the Loyola University (Chicago), he also wrote "Ibalon Under Storm and Siege: Essays on Bikol History" and "Vignettes of Bicol History" -- both books contributed to the rich discussions on the ongoing narrative and formation of our region.
"Pepito" and "Pepita" -- both characters found their way in the stories of Fr Paco in his homilies, both characters represent real people he had encountered, inserting them in tales of insight and love. During the rite of peace, Fr Paco would always encourage the churchgoers to give each other a sincere "peace be with you" through firm handshakes and warm hugs.
Fr Paco passed away early this morning, 30 April 2026, just a day after his 98th birthday.
We invite everyone to attend Fr Paco's Memorial Mass on Monday, 4 May 2026, 5:15pm at the University Church of Christ the King (Bagumbayan Campus).
