24th of May
Feast of SAINT JHOANNA WIFE OF CHUZA

St. Joanna holds a significant place in the New Testament as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. She was the wife of Chuza, who served as the steward—an important administrative position responsible for managing the household and affairs—of King Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee and Perea during the time of Jesus’ ministry.

Before becoming a follower, Joanna suffered from a serious illness, though the specific nature of her ailment is not detailed in biblical texts. Through her encounter with Jesus, she was miraculously healed, an experience that transformed her life completely. Grateful for this restoration, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to supporting Jesus’ work. Drawing from her personal wealth and resources—likely made available through her husband’s prominent position in Herod’s court—she contributed generously to the needs of Jesus and His companions, ensuring they had the means to travel, teach, and care for those in need throughout their ministry journeys in Judea and Galilee.

Beyond her role as a provider, Joanna is also counted among the brave group of women who stood by Jesus even during His crucifixion, remaining at the cross when many of the male disciples had fled in fear. Most notably, she was one of the first witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Along with other female followers, she went to the tomb early on the first day of the week to anoint Jesus’ body with spices, only to find the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. An angel appeared to them, announcing that Jesus had risen, and they were commissioned to share this life-changing news with the other disciples. Joanna thus played a crucial part in carrying the message of the resurrection—the central tenet of Christianity—to the very people who would go on to spread the faith across the world. Her example stands as a testament to devotion, gratitude, and the vital role that women played in the early Christian movement.

Saint Mary Salome was one of the holy women who remained steadfast in following and serving our Lord from the very beginning in Galilee all the way to the hill of Calvary. In her hands, she carries incense or precious oil—a symbol that represents her role as one of the "Three Marys" who journeyed to the tomb to honor the sacred body of Jesus with proper ritual anointing. She stands as a powerful symbol of a compassionate heart, not merely acting as a disciple, but rather as a mother who offered up her own children for the greater glory of God.

Throughout the pages of the Holy Gospel, her character was put to the test in profound ways. There came a moment when she approached the Lord to request positions of honor for her sons, yet Jesus gently taught her that true greatness is found not in earthly prestige, but in being willing to take up the cup of suffering. In the Passion of Christ, she revealed her genuine strength of will and unwavering devotion; she did not shrink back in the face of the soldiers' fury, but instead stood firm at the foot of the Cross, remaining by our Savior's side through His darkest hour.

Her faith was tested once more on the early morning of Easter Sunday. She was among the blessed women who arrived at the tomb to continue their acts of service, only to discover that the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. In that sacred moment, she became a witness to the glorious truth—that the Lord had risen from the dead, bringing eternal life and hope to all humanity.

As Saint Mary Salome walks among our lives, she conveys a powerful message to each of us: the love of a mother should always guide us toward God and His divine will. She is the patroness of mothers in families, as well as of all people who are ready to make sacrifices for their faith. In the solemn and meaningful journey of our procession, we rejoice with deep devotion because the example set by Saint Mary Salome reminds us that even when we are tested by earthly ambitions and the allure of the world, we must always return to the foot of the Cross of our Savior, where true peace and purpose are found.

Saint Mary Salome,
pray for us!

April 24 Feast of

𝕾𝖆𝖓𝖙𝖆 𝕸𝖆𝖗𝖎𝖆 𝕵𝖆𝖈𝖔𝖇𝖊

Saint Mary Jacobe, mother of James the Less, Jude Thaddeus, Simon Zealot, Joseph Barabbas and Salome. Saint Mary Jacobe was one of the most devoted female disciples who followed Jesus from Galilee onwards. In her hands, she carries a sign that reflects her role as one of the holy women who served and anointed the tomb of our Savior. She is an example of unwavering faith, both in the joyful and sorrowful moments of Christ’s life.

In the pages of the Holy Gospel, her strong will was tested as she stood at the foot of the Cross on Calvary, alongside the Blessed Mother and Mary Magdalene. Amid great danger and suffering, she did not leave until the very last breath of the Lord. Her faith was also tested on the early morning of Sunday; she was one of the first to go to the tomb to serve, but there she heard the joyful message that the Lord was not dead but alive.

As Saint Mary Jacobe walks among us may she touch our life as she shows us that true faith endures even in the face of death. She is the patroness of families united in serving God and of people faithful to their commitments. In the solemn walk of the procession, we rejoice with devotion because the heart of Saint Mary Jacobe—though tested by the darkness of life—remains a witness to the light of Christ.

Saint Mary Jacobe,

Pray for us!
