Something is striking about this titleโ€”it speaks of martyrdom, yet Mary did not die by the sword, nor was she dragged before persecutors. And still, the Church dares to call her Queen of Martyrs. Why? Because her martyrdom was not of the body, but of the heart.

At Calvary, Mary stood. Not as a distant observer, but as a mother who watched her Son suffer and die. Every blow, every insult, every wound inflicted on Christ pierced her interiorly. What the executioners did to His body, sorrow did to her soul. As foretold, โ€œa sword shall pierce your own soulโ€โ€”and that sword found its fullest meaning beneath the Cross.

Unlike the martyrs who are taken quickly by death, Mary endured a prolonged and conscious suffering. She could not turn away. She could not intervene. She could only remainโ€”loving, consenting, and offering. This is the depth of her martyrdom: not just suffering, but willingly uniting that suffering to the sacrifice of her Son.

And so she is called Queenโ€”not only because she suffered, but because she suffered perfectly. Without bitterness. Without rebellion. Without despair. Her sorrow was not empty; it was redemptive, joined entirely to Christโ€™s own offering.

Athanasius led a tumultuous but dedicated life of service to the Church. He was the great champion of the faith against the widespread heresy of A***nism, the teaching by Arius that Jesus was not truly divine. The vigor of his writings earned him the title of doctor of the Church.

Born of a Christian family in Alexandria, Egypt, and given a classical education, Athanasius became secretary to Alexander, the bishop of Alexandria, entered the priesthood and was eventually named bishop himself. His predecessor, Alexander, had been an outspoken critic of a new movement growing in the Eastโ€”A***nism.
When Athanasius assumed his role as bishop of Alexandria, he continued the fight against A***nism. At first, it seemed that the battle would be easily won and that A***nism would be condemned. Such, however, did not prove to be the case. The Council of Tyre was called and for several reasons that are still unclear, Emperor Constantine exiled Athanasius to northern Gaul. This was to be the first in a series of travels and exiles reminiscent of the life of Saint Paul.

After Constantine died, his son restored Athanasius as bishop. This lasted only a year, however, for he was deposed once again by a coalition of A***n bishops. Athanasius took his case to Rome, and Pope Julius I called a synod to review the case and other related matters.

Five times Athanasius was exiled for his defense of the doctrine of Christโ€™s divinity. During one period of his life, he enjoyed 10 years of relative peaceโ€”reading, writing, and promoting the Christian life along the lines of the monastic ideal to which he was greatly devoted. His dogmatic and historical writings are almost all polemic, directed against every aspect of A***nism.

Among his ascetical writings, his Life of St. Anthony achieved astonishing popularity and contributed greatly to the establishment of monastic life throughout the Western Christian world.

Athanasius suffered many trials while he was the bishop of Alexandria. He was given the grace to remain strong against what probably seemed at times to be insurmountable opposition. Athanasius lived his office as bishop completely. He defended the true faith of his flock, regardless of the cost to himself. In todayโ€™s world, we are experiencing this same call to remain true to our faith, no matter what. (franciscanmedia.org)

Communism, rooted in Karl Marx, is atheistic and materialist, denying God and reducing human life to economics, while Catholicism teaches that man is created for God and has a supernatural end.

In Divini Redemptoris, Pope Pius XI condemned Communism as โ€œintrinsically wrongโ€ for this reason. It promotes class struggle, whereas Catholic teachingโ€”articulated by Pope Leo XIII in Rerum Novarumโ€”calls for justice and cooperation grounded in human dignity. Communism rejects private property, but the Church defends it as a natural right, reaffirmed in Quadragesimo Anno.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2402โ€“2403) teaches that the right to private property is legitimate and rooted in human dignity, though ordered to the common good.

It often gives too much power to the state, which goes against the Catholic principle that decisions should be made at the lowest appropriate level. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explicitly rejects โ€œtotalitarian and atheistic ideologies associated with communismโ€ (CCC 2425).

Figures like St. Pope John Paul II (who experienced firsthand the horrors of communism) opposed it in practice, defending freedom rooted in truth.

Because of the grave danger this nefarious ideology posed to the common good,

To strengthen devotion to Saint Joseph and provide a clear Christian response to communist โ€œMay Dayโ€ ideology, Pope Pius XII established the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in 1955. This was not accidentalโ€”it directly countered materialist views of labor by presenting work as sacred, rooted in Godโ€™s design rather than class struggle or state control.

From Genesis onward, human work is shown as a participation in Godโ€™s creative action, a duty that dignifies the person rather than reducing him to an economic unit. Saint Joseph, a humble carpenter and foster father of Christ, embodies this truth: labor is not exploitation or mere production, but a path to holiness, responsibility, and service within the family.

Christ Himself worked under Joseph, sanctifying ordinary labor and rejecting any ideology that strips work of its spiritual meaning. Later, in Laborem Exercens, Pope John Paul II reaffirmed that the Church defends the dignity and rights of workers while rejecting systems that violate themโ€”whether through exploitation or through collectivist systems that erase personal responsibility and freedom.

In this light, Saint Joseph stands as a powerful model against atheistic and materialist ideologies: his life proclaims that true justice in work comes not from class conflict, but from faith, moral order, and the recognition of each workerโ€™s God-given dignity.
