Have Faith, Pray, and Forgive
by Tin Canon for Chris de Guzman

In today’s gospel, it may seem that Jesus just gave away the secret formula for answered prayers. First is to have faith in God, then pray believing that you will receive your prayer, BUT when you pray, make sure you have forgiven anyone you have a grievance with. Sounds easy right? Except for the last part? Yes, it is easier said than done.

What does it take to have faith? Hebrews 11:1 says “Faith is the assurance of things hoped, for the conviction of things not seen.” It is believing as if you already have what you have been praying for. It is not manifesting the way we know it. It is also not tricking ourselves of denying reality. It is living as if what we are praying for has already happened (even if it hasnt or it never will).

The next step is to pray without a doubt in your heart and believe that your prayer has already been answered. BUT, we cannot pray in full faith if there is unforgiveness. So, forgive first. If we are carrying an anger or resentment or a hatred towards anyone, this functions as a barrier to having faith. It makes a whole lot of sense right? How can we have faith that God can give us what we ask in prayer, if we do not know how to forgive? if we cannot forgive,it is tantamount to believing that that God cannot forgive our own transgressions (and that is a lack of faith). If we do not believe that our sins may be forgiven, then it will be hard for us to forgive others too. We receive God’s grace when our hearts are ready, when we have faith in Him.

PRAYER FOR TODAY
Dearest Lord,
Grant me the grace to forgive so that I may live in faith. Amen.

Can you forgive others? Can you forgive yourself? Ask God for the grace to forgive.

I Want To See
by Tin Canon for Chris de Guzman

When we hear a remarkable story, the first thing we say is… “weh! Di nga?” We refuse to believe unless we see it for ourselves!

I absolutely love today’s gospel story about Bartimaeus, the blind man who heard about Jesus of Nazareth passing by as he was begging by the roadside. Instead of saying “weh!! Di nga?” he immediately jumped at the chance to ask Jesus to heal him. He knew Jesus as Son of David, and so he broke his patterned way of life, by calling out to Jesus to pity him. And the rest, as they say, is history.

I truly admire this blind man. All his life, he has lived with his blindness until Jesus came along. In Jesus, he has placed all his hope. He left the roadside where he begs, threw aside his cloak, and came to Jesus. He left behind what is familiar, his only safety and security, to follow Jesus, knowing full well that only Jesus can heal him. That is faith beyond measure.

I believe that if we can be like this blind man, we will also be healed of the “blindness” that we are clinging on to. Our blindness can come in many forms. It can be an anger/bitterness we have, it can be an abuse we continue to bear, it can even be our lack of self-awareness that prohibits us from seeing the truth about ourselves, or other perspectives that we need to open ourselves to.

PRAYER FOR TODAY
Dearest Lord, I want to see. I want to see what you have in store for me for me. I come to you in full faith knowing that only you can make me see. Remove all blindnesses I may have. Amen.
