Obispo Maximo XIV, The Most Rev. Joel O. Porlares, leads the delegates of the 16th General Assembly of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente in singing "Mabuhay Ka Iglesia Filipina", the IFI Centennial Song, one of the most well-known hymns of the Church composed by Rev. Mario Quince.
The 16th General Assembly was held from May 6โ9, 2026, at the IFI Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage and Punta Villa Resort in Iloilo City, hosted by the Diocese of Iloilo.
The General Assembly is the highest governing and policy-making body of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, convening regularly every three years. It is composed of all bishops, two active-duty priests, and three delegates each representing the men, women, and youth sectors from every diocese, elected through their respective conventions, as provided in Sections 1 and 2, Article II of the Church Constitution.
The General Assembly functions as a synod through which both ordained and non-ordained members share the responsibility of witnessing to the apostolic faith by virtue of their common baptism. It serves as the governing body of the Church in fulfilling the mission entrusted by God, safeguarding the unity and continuity of the apostolic faith, and guiding the faithful in living out their baptismal covenant. As such, it is the final authority in all matters affecting the life, order, and discipline of the Church.
The General Assembly performs the following functions:
a. To elect the Supreme Bishop of the Church for a term of six years, without immediate reelection. (Not applicable for this General Assembly.)
b. To approve the three-year rolling plan of the Church, including its general programs, policy guidelines, detailed budget for the ensuing year, and estimates for the succeeding two years.
c. To act upon proposed amendments to the Constitution, Canons, and Articles of Religion in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
d. To act upon any recommendation of the Supreme Council of Bishops regarding charges against the Supreme Bishop; provided, however, that if convicted, the General Assembly shall immediately elect a Supreme Bishop to serve only the unexpired term.
e. To act upon appeals from decisions of the Executive Commission on matters falling within the jurisdiction of the General Assembly.
f. To receive and approve bequests, donations, and contributions to the Church.
