Salvation by Grace Alone

Sola Gratia (By grace alone). As a Reformed Christians, we confess that we are saved and redeemed from sin by God's grace alone. The principle of “Sola Scriptura” states that when it comes to the basis of our salvation, we are saved from sin and from the wrath of God only by the grace of God. Our redemption from sin is not by our work or merit. Salvation is a gift from God. We don't work for it. We don't deserve it. It's not a reward for doing anything good.

"[Sola Gratia] means that nothing the sinner does commends him to the grace of God, and that the sinner does not cooperate with God in order to merit his salvation. “Sola Gratia” recognizes that by nature man is born dead in sin and transgression and under the wrath of God. Left on his own, every human being will continue in his sin until death. Man can do nothing on his own to rescue himself from sin and from the wrath of God that is to come on the sons of disobedience (Col. 3:6). If you and I were to be delivered from the condemnation and corruption of sin, God and God alone must act.

Indeed, God did act in order to rescue and redeem us. He did it on His own initiative. He did it in the person and work of Christ. He did it at the Cross on behalf of sinful and undeserving men and women. In Christ, God dealt with sin. He sent His Son to suffer and die for the sake of and in place of sinners.

That is why we cannot talk about salvation by grace alone without talking about sin and about our Sin-bearer, Jesus Christ. God's grace is revealed in Jesus Christ. Truth be told, Christ is the fullness of God’s grace. When Christ is in us and we are in Christ, God’s grace abounds in us.

What Method Do You Use in Evangelism?

Occasionally, friends also ask me of the method I used in doing evangelism. I would always tell them that I use the text of the Scripture in evangelism. I sometimes present the gospel using the Apostles’ Creed as my outline.

In one-on-one or small group evangelism, however, I don't usually use any tools or methods. I am familiar with the “Two Ways to Live” method and “The Bridge to Life” Gospel method, but I seldom, if at all, use them.

What I usually do is to engage the person or a group in a conversation. As I talk to the person or a group of people, I will always bring them to the knowledge of God as the Creator and Lord over us. I will make them realize how God made us in His own image that we might know Him, worship Him, love Him, and serve Him.

Then I would add that because of the disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, as well as because of our own sin and shortcomings, we are separated from God and we live under His condemnation. And I would forewarn them that if they remain in this miserable condition, they will be in a very precarious state or condition.

Yet because of His goodness and mercy, God sought us out. He took the initiative to reach out to us. We who by nature are lost and have fallen from God’s glory are being called by God to return to Him. He does this through the preaching of the gospel which proclaims that God has sent His only Son, Jesus, the Christ. The Son of God was sent by the Father to find us and to redeem us from our sins through His death on the cross and through His coming back to life.

Now, through the proclamation of the gospel, God promises that those who turn away from their sin and put their trust in Christ will not perish but will receive the promised eternal life.

So, in order for us to possess this gift of life, one has to repent and turn away from his sins and believe that what Jesus did at the cross is the only way to be set free from sin and its condemnation. Otherwise, if one does not repent of his sin, he will be doomed.
That's typically what I say to those whom I want to evangelize. There are variations in the way I present these truths. But in the main, I would say that every believer who is eager to do evangelism must be familiar of these essential truths of the gospel so that in the process of conversing with others, he will be able to present these truths to the one or the group he is conversing with.

We can use some methods like the ones I mentioned above in presenting the gospel. There are other methods as well that are available out there (like the 4SL, EE, etc.), but the truths that we should always remember to present or to proclaim are still the same: God created us and established a covenant relation with us, we fell into sin and are separated from God, Christ redeemed us by His death and resurrection, we need to repent from sin and believe the good news of salvation in Christ alone.

In Christ Alone: Our Hope Against Despair Due to Sin

"The power of God strengthening and preserving true believers in grace is more than a match for the flesh. Yet those converted are not always so activated and motivated by God that in certain specific actions they cannot by their own fault depart from the leading of grace, be led astray by the desires of the flesh, and give in to them. For this reason they must constantly watch and pray that they may not be led into temptations. When they fail to do
this, not only can they be carried away by the flesh, the world, and Satan into sins, even serious and outrageous ones, but also by God’s just permission they sometimes are so carried away—witness the sad cases, described in Scripture, of David, Peter, and other saints falling into sins.

"By such monstrous sins, however, they greatly offend God, deserve the sentence of death, grieve the Holy Spirit, suspend the exercise of faith, severely wound the conscience, and sometimes lose the awareness of grace for a time—until, after they have returned to the right way by genuine repentance, God’s fatherly face again shines upon them.

"For God, who is rich in mercy, according to the unchangeable purpose of election does not take the Holy Spirit from his own completely, even when they fall grievously. Neither does God let them fall down so far that they forfeit the grace of adoption and the state of justification, or commit the sin which leads to death (the sin against the Holy Spirit), and plunge themselves, entirely forsaken by God, into eternal ruin.

"For, in the first place, God preserves in those saints when they fall the imperishable seed from which they have been born again, lest it perish or be dislodged. Secondly, by his Word and Spirit God certainly and effectively renews them to repentance so that they have a heartfelt and godly sorrow for the sins they have committed; seek and obtain, through faith and with a contrite heart, forgiveness in the blood of the Mediator; experience again the grace of a reconciled God; through faith adore God’s mercies; and from then on more eagerly work out their own salvation with fear and trembling."
