Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God | January 1, 2026
On the first day of the year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a feast that honors Mary’s divine motherhood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This solemnity affirms the central truth of the faith, that Jesus is truly God and truly man and that Mary is rightly called Theotokos, the Mother of God.
In the Philippines, this day is a Holy Day of Obligation, calling the faithful to participate in the Holy Mass. As we begin a new year, the Church invites us to place our lives, families, and hopes under Mary’s maternal care, seeking her intercession and guidance.
Celebrating this solemnity also reminds us that the new year begins not only with resolutions but also with gratitude, prayer, and trust in God’s providence. Through Mary, we are led closer to her Son, thanking the Lord for the blessings of the past year and entrusting the coming year to His loving mercy.
