Before David died, he gave his testimony of how the Lord spake to him, saying that he that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

2 Samuel 23:2-3 KJV
The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. [3] The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

In our government today, many people ask, is there still hope that our country will be better? And the truth is none, as people will get worse and worse as the people who rule among us don't have the fear of God in them.

2 Timothy 3:13 KJV
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

But as Christians, we still have hope not in our government but in the truth that someday it is God who will reign over us all where no sin is present, no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, and neither shall there be any more pain.

Revelation 21:3-4 KJV
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. [4] And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

When we see how people rule today, it is clearly shown how they have not known the Lord nor have fear of the Lord, but we are looking forward to the day that God will reign and where sin is not present for the people who rule.

Famine - a form of punishment

There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year, and David enquired of the LORD about it, and the Lord answered him, 'It is for Saul and for his bloody house because he slew the Gibeonites.

2 Samuel 21:1 KJV
Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.

The Israelites made an agreement with the Gibeonites during the time of Joshua, but Saul violated it and sought to slay them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.

2 Samuel 21:2 KJV
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)

God punishes them with famine as a punishment for breaching their agreement with the Gibeonites.

Therefore, David asks the Gibeonites for atonement for breaching their agreement with them.

2 Samuel 21:3 KJV
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?

In our lives we will face problems, including financial problems such as famine or lack, but like David, we should check what the reason for it is because sometimes it can be a punishment from God because we have done something that is wrong.

Not all financial problems are punishment; some of them are part of trials in life as a Christian, but some of them may also be a punishment from God.

There are things that are not good that happen in our lives, and like David, it is good to check why it happened, as it can be a punishment from God.
