BURNED OUT? MEET ST. IGNATIUS | We live in a culture that glorifies busyness. Packed schedules and endless deadlines have become badges of honor, yet many quietly carry the weight of exhaustion.
In a world that celebrates doing more, St. Ignatius of Loyola reminds us that a fruitful life begins not with activity but with a deep relationship with God.
Born into a noble family in Spain, Ignatius dreamed of military glory until a cannonball shattered his leg during the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. Confined to bed for months, he read the life of Christ and the lives of the saints, discovering a different kind of heroism rooted in holiness rather than worldly success.
As he reflected, Ignatius noticed that dreams of fame left him restless, while thoughts of following Christ filled him with lasting peace. This experience became the foundation of his teaching on discernment of spirits -- learning to recognize the desires that lead us closer to God and those that draw us away.
His conversion did not lead him to withdraw from the world but to serve it more generously. He founded the Society of Jesus in 1540 and composed the Spiritual Exercises, a retreat guide that continues to help people encounter Christ and discern God's will in everyday life.
Ignatian spirituality is often summarized by the phrase "contemplatives in action." Prayer and work are not opposing realities but inseparable parts of Christian discipleship. Authentic service flows from a heart that first listens to God.
This insight is especially relevant in an age marked by burnout. Many people are exhausted not only because they have too much to do but because their identity has become tied to achievement. Ignatius reminds us that our worth comes not from what we accomplish but from the God who lovingly calls us.
One of his most enduring practices is the Daily Examen, a simple prayer of gratitude and reflection at the end of each day. By pausing to recognize God's presence in ordinary moments, we learn that life is not merely a series of tasks but an invitation to grow in love.
Through the intercession of St. Ignatius of Loyola, may we become contemplatives in action -- people whose work flows from prayer, whose service springs from love, and whose lives bear witness that true fulfillment is found not in what we achieve, but in the One who calls us to Himself.
