"Do this and you will get God's favor; do that and you will be blessed."

These kind of phrases shift our relationship with God from a personal bond to a transactional contract... that human effort can obligate God to act.

But this law-abiding obedience apart from faith can produce legalism. This creates a "performance-based" spiritual life.

For God says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.' (Romans 9:15–16)

So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

"And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)

Yes, the moral law acts as a mirror to show us our flaws and limitations, but it lacks the power to change our hearts. Only God can.

"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." (Romans 6:14)

This transition from Law to Grace changes our identity from "workers" to "children."

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you." (John 15:15)

This is a shift from a master-servant duty-based relationship to an intimate, trusting friendship, where Jesus shares God's plans and purposes with His followers.

You are not striving for a position; you are living from a position.
You are complete in Christ who is your righteousness.
Because Christ is your righteousness, your "bad days" don't make Him love you any less, and your "good days" don't make Him love you more.

A timely reminder as we start the new year: 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝗱'𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲.

It is only through Christ and His sacrifice on the cross that we have life. Because humanity is utterly depraved, no measure of good works, charity, or service to God can bring salvation. Salvation is entirely the work of God. Unless the Lord regenerates our hearts, nothing we do can save us.

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5)

Yet in His great love and abounding grace, Jesus willingly bore the full cost of our sin upon the cross. By His death, every transgression was wiped away, and in Him we are made alive together with Christ. Even more, His sacrifice was a glorious victory, publicly triumphing over Satan and every scheme set against us.

As A.W. Tozer expresses it, "God's already put me so far in debt that if I were to live one million millenniums I couldn't pay Him for what He's done for me."

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. (Romans 12:1)
