βThey were all filled with the Holy Spirit.β (Acts 2:4)
Pentecost is not merely the remembrance of a moment in history. It is the living reality of the Church continually renewed by the Spirit of God.
In todayβs First Reading, the Apostles, once gathered in fear behind closed doors, encountered the powerful coming of the Holy Spirit like a strong driving wind and tongues of fire. What was once fear became courage. What was once silence became proclamation. Through the Spirit, the Church was born and sent forth on mission to all nations.
Saint Paul reminds us in the Second Reading that though we are many, we are one Body in Christ, united by the same Spirit who gives different gifts for the building up of the Church. Pentecost calls us to move beyond division and become witnesses of communion, service, and love.
In the Gospel, the Risen Christ breathes upon His disciples and says, βPeace be with you. Receive the Holy Spirit.β The same breath of God that brought life at creation is now breathed upon the Church, commissioning every believer to continue Christβs mission of mercy, reconciliation, and hope.
Today, the Holy Spirit continues to move within the Church and within each one of us. He strengthens the weary, rekindles fading faith, and sends ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary mission in the name of Christ.
May this Pentecost awaken in us a deeper zeal for evangelization, a renewed love for the Church, and the courage to proclaim Christ not only with our lips, but with our very lives.
Come, Holy Spirit, set our hearts on fire.
