We are on the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s gospel reading, Jesus offers his disciples a perspective on the persecution and suffering that they might encounter as they follow him.
He tells them, “Fear no one . . . speak in the light . . . proclaim on the housetops” what they learned from him: the Good News and the Truth. Why can they become fearless? Because the Father knows them and cares for them. They are “worth more than many sparrows” that God sustains and protects.
They can also place their hope in Jesus who said: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.”
This is the same encouragement and assurance that we have, brothers and sisters, as we follow Jesus today. Our discipleship will be tried and threatened, but God is greater than all the trials.
