𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟮: 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆

The Universal church celebrates today the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary, as the mother of the eternal king, is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth.

The feast was first instituted in 1954, four years after the proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Pope Pius XII. It was first celebrated during May 31st, which coincides with the culmination of the month of May dedicated to Mary. This was later moved to August 22nd, marking 8 days after the solemnity of her assumption into heaven.

According to tradition, as well as mentioned in the Old Testament, the title of queen is not given to the spouse of the king, but to the mother of the king. 1 Kings 2:19-20 says, “Then Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, and the king stood up to meet her and paid her homage. Then he sat down upon his throne, and a throne was provided for the king’s mother, who sat at his right. She said, ‘There is one small favor I would ask of you. Do not refuse me.’ The king said to her, ‘Ask it, my mother, for I will not refuse you’."

Jesus is the eternal king of the Davidic Kingdom, and His mother, Mary, is the queen. She, who is the perfect creation of God, is seated at the right hand of Jesus, and reigns as the queen of heaven and earth.

LIVE | Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟭: 𝗦𝘁. 𝗣𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗫, 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝗲

St. Pius (originally Joseph Sarto) was born on June 2, 1835 in Venetia, now in Italy. He is second of 10 children in a poor Italian family. In 1850, he entered the seminary at Padua, and was eventually ordained a priest 8 years later. Fr. Joseph served in his town of Venetia, where he gained the reputation for being especially pious, giving away his food and clothes to those who are in need and forming programs that help children and adults learn about the faith. In 1884 Pope Leo XIII made Sarto bishop of Mantua, and in 1893 he was appointed cardinal and patriarch of Venice. At 63, he was elected pope on August 4, 1903.

Ever mindful of his humble origin, Pope Pius stated, “I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor.” He was embarrassed by some of the pomp of the papal court. “Look how they have dressed me up,” he said in tears to an old friend. To another, “It is a penance to be forced to accept all these practices. They lead me around surrounded by soldiers like Jesus when he was seized in Gethsemani.”

Interested in politics, Pope Pius encouraged Italian Catholics to become more politically involved. One of his first papal acts was to end the supposed right of governments to interfere by veto in papal elections—a practice that reduced the freedom of the 1903 conclave which had elected him. In 1905, when France renounced its agreement with the Holy See and threatened confiscation of Church property if governmental control of Church affairs were not granted, Pius X courageously rejected the demand. While Saint Pius X did not author a famous social encyclical as his predecessor had done, he denounced the ill treatment of indigenous peoples on the plantations of Peru, sent a relief commission to Messina after an earthquake, and sheltered refugees at his own expense.

On the 11th anniversary of his election as pope, Europe was plunged into World War I. Saint Pius X had foreseen it, but it killed him. “This is the last affliction the Lord will visit on me. I would gladly give my life to save my poor children from this ghastly scourge.” He died a few weeks after the war began, and was canonized in 1954.

𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟲: 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁. 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗵, Patron Saint of dogs and dog owners

Today marks the feast of St. Roch, the Patron of dogs and dog Owners. Born in Montpellier, France, to a wealthy governor, he had an unusual birthmark in the shape of a cross on his chest. It was said to be a sign of his mother's prayers to the Virgin Mary for healing from barrenness. After his parents' deaths when he was 20 years old, he chose to live a life of prayer and piety.

He joined the Third Order of the Franciscans and went on pilgrimages to the holy sites of Rome. There, he miraculously healed many people who had been struck by the deadly Black Plague. He was later afflicted by the disease himself and commended his soul to God, awaiting death.

During this time, he was accompanied by a nobleman's hunting dog, which brought him food and licked his wounds. The nobleman followed his dog, who led him to St. Roch, and then tended to his wounds. Upon returning to Montpellier, St. Roch did not reveal his true identity as the son of the former governor. Eventually, he was accused of being a spy and was imprisoned by his own uncle. He died there five days later.

Today, the Universal church commemorates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. The Virgin Mary, free from the stain of original sin, did not suffer the consequences of sin, and was taken body and soul into Heaven.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was sent a message from God asking her to bear His son. Her faith and genuine trust in God led her to agreeing to His favor. From her “yes” at the Annunciation to standing at the foot of the Cross, she remained steadfast in her love for God and her mission as the Mother of the Church.

The Annunciation, her visit to Elizabeth, the Nativity of Jesus, her presence at the Wedding at Cana, and her unwavering witness during Christ’s Passion and Resurrection, all shaped her life. Mary was a wonderful woman who had values of faith and action, eventually leading her to be one of our role models, especially now during these times. She is the model of purity and humility. At the end of her earthly life, she was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. This symbolizes the grace that God grants to those who follow Him, remaining steadfast in His love.

When she was taken body and soul into heaven, this event was later on called The Assumption. This belief was declared a dogma of the Catholic Church by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950.
