According to early Christian records and the Martyrology of Reichenau, she was a Roman virgin of the early Christian church, the daughter of Saint Pudens, friend of the Apostles, and sister of Saints Praxedes and Praxedes, together with presbyter Pastor and Pope Pius I, built a baptistry in the church inside their fatherโ€™s house, and started to baptize pagans. These sisters were also known to gather relics of the martyrs that will be venerated by early Christians.

Following her parents' deaths, Potenciana sold her vast inheritance and distributed the wealth entirely to the poor. She converted her family's estate into a safe house and baptistery for Christians. Pope Pius I frequently held Mass in her home, and through her efforts, over 90 of her household servants were baptized.

Under the reign of Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Antoninus Pius, Christians faced severe persecution. She was martyred at the age of 16 for refusing to worship and offer sacrifices to the Roman emperors as deities.

The Spanish Conquistador Miguel Lรณpez de Legazpi, the founder of the city of Manila, gained possession of the territory in 1571 on the 19th of May, the feast of Santa Potenciana and declared her patron saint of what is now the Philippines. However, at 1942, Pope Pius XII, at the request of the bishops in the Philippines, declared the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception as principal patroness of the Philippines with Saints Pudentiana and Rose of Lima as secondary patronesses, mentioning that historical documents indicated Saint Pudentiana as Patroness of the Philippines from the 16th century and Saint Rose of Lima from the 17th.

Today, then Universal Church celebrates the solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, known as well as the 'Ascension Sunday.' Its marks 40 days after His resurrection, the completion of His earthly ministry, and the beginning of the Church's global mission of evangelization.

St. John Chrysostom and St. Augustine make reference to it, but it was probably St. Gregory of Nyssa who influenced the propagation of the feast. During the apostolic times, the feast falls on Thursday. The solemnity is evetually transferred to the following Sunday. With hlHis Ascension into Heaven, the presence of the โ€œhistorical Christโ€ comes to an end, and the presence of the Body of Christ, the Church, is inaugurated.

According to scripture and tradition, this event occurred near Jerusalem, where Jesus entered Heaven by His own divine authority, which is distinct from the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Throughout His life, Jesus united His divine nature with a human nature that grew through earthly experience and love. By bringing His perfected human nature into the Beatific Vision, He opened the door for humanity to eventually follow.
