Couples for Christ (CFC) is a Catholic lay ecclesial movement founded in the Philippines that has grown into a worldwide evangelization ministry dedicated to renewing and strengthening Christian family life. What began as a small outreach program for married couples has evolved into a global community of families, singles, youth, and children united in the mission of bringing people closer to Jesus Christ and serving the Church.
Today, Couples for Christ is present in more than 160 countries and continues to be one of the most active Catholic movements engaged in evangelization, family renewal, faith formation, and social transformation.

Couples for Christ traces its beginnings to 1981 in Manila, Philippines. It was established as a ministry of Ang Ligaya ng Panginoon (The Joy of the Lord), a Catholic charismatic covenant community. The founders recognized the growing need to strengthen marriages and families amidst the challenges facing modern society.
The movement began with a small group of married couples who desired to live a more committed Christian life and to deepen their relationship with God through prayer, fellowship, and discipleship. Through a structured evangelization program known as the Christian Life Program (CLP), couples were introduced to a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith and were encouraged to live out their vocation as Christian husbands and wives.
The response was overwhelming. As more couples experienced spiritual renewal, the movement rapidly expanded throughout the Philippines and eventually reached Filipino communities overseas. What started as a local ministry soon developed into an international movement recognized by the Catholic Church.
In 1996, Couples for Christ received recognition from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines as a National Private Association of Lay Faithful. In 2000, the Holy See, through the Pontifical Council for the Laity, formally recognized Couples for Christ as an International Association of the Faithful of Pontifical Right, affirming its mission and contribution to the universal Church.
The Mission of Couples for Christ
The mission of Couples for Christ is rooted in the conviction that the family is the basic unit of society and that transformed families can help transform the Church and the world.
Its vision is often summarized as:
To fulfill this vision, Couples for Christ seeks to:
- Evangelize men and women and lead them to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Build strong and Christ-centered marriages.
- Form Christian families that become witnesses of faith.
- Strengthen parish life and support the mission of the Catholic Church.
- Raise future generations of faithful Catholic leaders.
- Serve the poor and participate in works of social transformation.
The movement emphasizes prayer, Scripture, Christian formation, household meetings, worship assemblies, leadership development, and missionary work.

As Couples for Christ continued to grow, it became evident that evangelization must reach every member of the family. This led to the establishment of various family ministries that cater to different stages of life.
1. Kids for Christ (KFC)
Kids for Christ serves children and seeks to introduce them to Jesus Christ at an early age. Through age-appropriate teachings, worship, activities, and camps, children learn Christian values and develop a personal relationship with God.
2. Youth for Christ (YFC)
Youth for Christ ministers to teenagers and young people. It provides a vibrant environment where youth can grow in their Catholic faith while navigating the challenges of modern society. Through camps, conferences, assemblies, and mission work, YFC forms young disciples and future Church leaders.
3. Singles for Christ (SFC)
Singles for Christ is dedicated to single men and women who seek to grow in holiness while discerning God's plan for their lives. It provides formation, fellowship, and opportunities for service while promoting Christian values in relationships and daily living.
4. Handmaids of the Lord (HOLD)
Handmaids of the Lord serves women who are no longer single but are not part of Couples for Christ, including widows, separated women, and mature single women. The ministry provides spiritual support, formation, and opportunities for service within the Church.
5. Servants of the Lord (SOLD)
Servants of the Lord serves men in similar circumstances as the Handmaids of the Lord. It helps them grow in faith, leadership, and Christian discipleship while actively participating in evangelization and community life.
Together, these ministries form the CFC Family Ministries, allowing individuals and families to remain actively involved in Christian formation regardless of their stage in life.

One of the defining characteristics of Couples for Christ is its strong sense of community.
Members gather regularly in small groups known as households. These household groups provide spiritual support, accountability, friendship, and opportunities for faith sharing. Members pray together, reflect on Scripture, discuss Christian teachings, and encourage one another in living out their faith.
This household structure allows the movement to foster genuine Christian relationships while providing pastoral care and ongoing formation.
The community also gathers for larger assemblies, conferences, retreats, leadership trainings, and mission activities that strengthen unity and deepen commitment to Christ.

An important chapter in the history of Couples for Christ involves its relationship with Gawad Kalinga.
Gawad Kalinga began in 1995 as a social outreach program under Couples for Christ. Its mission was to address poverty through housing, community development, and values formation. Through the efforts of thousands of volunteers, Gawad Kalinga became one of the most recognized poverty alleviation movements in the Philippines.
For many years, Gawad Kalinga operated as the social action arm of Couples for Christ. Together, they mobilized volunteers, built homes, and transformed impoverished communities across the country.
However, differences eventually emerged regarding organizational direction and mission priorities. In 2007, Couples for Christ and Gawad Kalinga formally separated and began operating independently. Despite the separation, both organizations continue to pursue their respective missions of evangelization and social transformation.

Following the separation from Gawad Kalinga, Couples for Christ strengthened its social mission through ANCOP, which stands for "Answering the Cry of the Poor."
ANCOP serves as the primary humanitarian and social development arm of Couples for Christ. It seeks to bring Christ's compassion to the poor through various programs focused on:
- Housing for poor families
- Education and scholarship assistance
- Child sponsorship
- Community development
- Disaster relief and rehabilitation
- Livelihood programs
- Healthcare initiatives
ANCOP embodies the belief that evangelization must be accompanied by concrete acts of love and service. Through ANCOP, Couples for Christ demonstrates that Christian faith must not only be preached but also lived through works of mercy and charity.
A Continuing Mission
More than four decades after its founding, Couples for Christ continues to evangelize, form disciples, strengthen families, and serve the poor throughout the world.
Its mission remains as relevant today as it was in 1981: to build Christ-centered families, form faithful Catholic communities, and raise generations of disciples committed to renewing the face of the earth.
Through Couples for Christ, Singles for Christ, Youth for Christ, Kids for Christ, Handmaids of the Lord, Servants of the Lord, and ANCOP, the movement continues to fulfill its calling of bringing individuals and families closer to Christ while responding to the needs of the Church and society.
From a small group of couples in Manila to a worldwide Catholic movement, Couples for Christ stands as a testimony to the power of evangelization, community, family renewal, and Christian service.
