Menstruation is a natural process created by Allah, and it is never a sign of misfortune or spiritual deficiency. Islam acknowledges the unique experiences of women and provides ease for them. Allah says in the Qurâan:
âAllah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bearâŚâ (Qurâan 2:286)
If menstruation were something negative, would the Most Merciful decree it for women? Of course not. Instead of feeling disappointed during Ramadan, remember that worship is not limited to fasting and prayer. Islam is a religion of mercy and consideration, not hardship. Hereâs what you can do while on your period during Ramadan:
1. Engage in Dhikr and Duâa
Even if you are unable to pray, you can still strengthen your connection with Allah.
⢠Keep your tongue busy with SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah.
⢠Make sincere duâa for yourself and others. The Prophet  said, âDuâa is worship.â (Tirmidhi, 3372)
⢠Reflect on your relationship with Allah and ask Him for guidance and forgiveness.
2. Reflect on the Qurâan
Most scholars agree that menstruating women should not recite the Qurâan from memory or touch the Mushaf. However, there are other ways to stay connected to its teachings.
⢠Listen to Qurâanic recitations.
⢠Read translations and tafsir to reflect on the meanings.
⢠Apply the lessons of the Qurâan in daily life.
Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it is about deepening oneâs connection with Allah.
3. Give Charity and Help Those Fasting
The Prophet  said, âCharity extinguishes sins as water extinguishes fire.â (Tirmidhi, 614)
⢠Donate to those in need, even if it is a small amount.
⢠Help prepare iftar or suhoor for family members or the community.
⢠Offer kindness and support to those around you, as every good deed is an act of worship.
4. Take Care of Your Body and Health
Menstruation is a time when the body naturally requires rest. Islam does not view rest as laziness but as a necessity.
⢠Prioritize sleep and nourishment to maintain strength.
⢠Engage in activities that bring calmness and mental clarity.
⢠Take care of yourself without guilt, as a healthy body allows for better worship.
5. Set Intentions and Plan Your Ibadah
Ramadan is a time of reflection and self-improvement. Use this period to assess and refine your spiritual goals.
⢠What have you learned so far this Ramadan?
⢠What aspects of your worship can you improve?
⢠What habits do you want to continue even after Ramadan?
The Prophet  said, âActions are judged by intentions.â (Bukhari & Muslim) Sincere intentions are already rewarded by Allah, even before the action is carried out.
Menstruation Does Not Stop Your Worship
Your connection with Allah is not measured by fasting alone. Islam honors the struggles of women and provides them with alternative ways to worship. The rewards of Ramadan are still within your reach. Instead of feeling left out, use this time as an opportunity to grow spiritually in other ways. Allah sees your sincerity, and every effort is counted in His sight.
