The year is Bingwu, the season is early summer; Yangmei Mountain is lush and green, the ancestral courtyard fragrant with lingering fragrance. On May 17, 2026, Master Menqing of Mahākyō Xinyuan Temple in the Philippines led a group across the ocean to return to the Sect, paying homage at Xuefeng Temple in Nan'an, the ancestral temple of Minnan Chan Buddhism, tracing their roots, paying homage to their ancestors, and continuing their Dharma connection together.
On May 18, the assembly gathered at the Dharma Hall of XueFeng Temple to solemnly hold the Great Auspicious Fasting Heaven Blessing Dharma Assembly, relying on the compassionate light of the Three Jewels, devoutly making offerings and dedicating merit.
1. Tracing the Ancestral Origins: Master Yicun Chan, a Leading Figure in the Chan Tradition. Xuefeng Temple in Nan'an, located atop Yangmei Mountain and known as 'Little Snow Peak,' is the hometown of Master Yicun Zhenjue, a great Chan master of the late Tang dynasty. The master's secular surname was Zeng. He was born in Nan'an in the second year of the Changqing era of the Tang Dynasty (822), stayed at Zhide Temple, admired the Buddhist Vehicle from a young age, became a monk at age 12, shaved his head at 17, and later founded a sect on Xuefeng Mountain in Fuzhou to spread the Dharma. His Daoist tradition spread far and wide, with many dragons and elephants emerging. He extended the Yunmen and Fayan sects, both revered by all directions. In his later years, he returned to his hometown, built a hut at his parents' tombs, and observed mourning for three years. His filial devotion moved Heaven, and his teachings became an exemplary example. The temple is named 'Xuefeng,' inheriting the Dharma lineage of Daxuefeng from afar, serving as a major center of Chan Buddhism in Quannan and the source of Dharma for overseas monks.
2. Fasting Heaven Blessings: Solemn Dharma Assembly, Devout Dedication. On May 18th at Mao hour, the Great Auspicious Fasting Blessing Dharma Assembly was successfully launched. Master Xin Zheng of Xuefeng Temple presides over the ritual, holding a censer and offering incense, leading the assembly in proper practice. Inside the Dharma Hall, incense and flowers were arrayed, lamps and candles gleamed brilliantly. The monks chanted scriptures and chanted sacred names, their Sanskrit chants clear and resonant, their demeanor solemn and dignified. Filipino Chinese devotees respectfully bowed and devoted themselves wholeheartedly, sincerely praying for the protection of the Dharma protector Dragon and the blessing of the Three Jewels' compassionate light. With this supreme pure karma of paying homage to ancestors and worshipping the sages, and offering to the heavens in fasting, it is universally restored to all directions: praying for the ancestral virtue to endure, the enduring lineage of Zen, the enduring Dharma to endure, and the Buddha's brilliance to grow day by day; Dedication is dedicated to the present World's Honored One, wishing for good physical and mental health, harmony among relatives, growth of good roots, and complete merit and wisdom; Dedication is dedicated to all faithful and virtuous believers, wishing the whole family good fortune, all things going smoothly, disasters and obstacles all eliminated, and lasting blessings; Dedication is dedicated to those who cultivate and cultivate their path, and those who establish their careers have a prosperous future; Respectfully wishing the nation prosperity and peace across the four seas, enduring Sino-Philippine French friendship, and everlasting diplomatic relations; May all beings in the Dharma realm share in the benefits of the Dharma, be free from suffering and attain happiness, share in the Buddha's grace, and together attain enlightenment.
3. Dharma Teachings: Ancestral Intentions, Enduring Wisdom Lamps. The Heavenly Meal Fulfillment of Merit. The Masses Step Away from the Library and sincerely pay homage to Master Fadu, Abbot of Xuefeng Temple in Nan'an. The Dharma Master taught the assembly: All devotees, having traveled across the ocean and returned from Southeast Asia, paid homage at Putuo, Xuedou, and Lingyin, and now gathered at the ancestral temple at Xuefeng. Such sincere pilgrimage, aspiration, and remembrance of roots and ancestors is truly rare and joyful! Xuefeng Ancient Temple is the site of Master Yicun, with its Zen roots and Dharma lineage spanning thousands of years. For over a hundred years, great benevolent teachers such as Master Xingyuan and Master Ruijin, inheriting the Dharma milk of Xuefeng, have crossed south to the Philippine Islands, opened mountains and built temples, spreading the Dharma and benefiting living beings. This led to the founding of the Mahayana Faith Wish Temple in the Philippines, which became a key center for Chinese Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Now that you have returned, it is precisely the Dharma lineage connected by a thread, sharing a Zen heart across ten thousand miles. The ancestral temple and the Mahayana Faith Vow Temple, the Dharma waters share the same source, the Dharma milk lineage is one lineage. Such a wonderful connection is truly planted in past lives.
Today marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of Mahayana Faith Vow Temple, with flourishing Dharma fortune and a grand event approaching. The grand water and land feast assembly will be held, continuing the Buddha's wisdom and benefiting sentient beings. We hope that through this pure karma of pilgrimage, you will bring glory to your ancestral home, pray for faith and vows, carry forward the legacy of your predecessors, carry forward the legacy of the sages, and expand the Buddhist teachings of the Philippines, let the spirit of Mahayana Buddhism spread throughout Southeast Asia, and let the teachings of Chan spread far and wide.
May this journey bring you increased blessings and wisdom, attainment of enlightenment, health of body and mind, family harmony, smooth careers, and academic diligence. He further wished for the everlasting strength of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines, lasting legal friendship, national peace and people's peace, and favorable weather and favorable weather.
May the Three Jewels be blessed, may the heavens protect you, may your merits be complete, your journey safe, always blessed by compassionate light, and may your blessings endure!"
Upon hearing the Dharma, everyone was joyful and eager, faithfully accepted and practiced, joined their palms in reverence, and expressed gratitude for the master's compassionate Dharma offering. Their hearts were filled with Dharma joy and returned fully satisfied.
4. Endless Dharma Affinity: Sharing the Same Wind for Ten Thousand Miles, Wholeheartedly Taking Refuge
This pilgrimage to the ancestral hall at Mahayana Shingwan Temple in the Philippines is not only a journey for overseas Chinese to trace their roots and honor ancestors, but also a grand event of cultural integration and connection of Buddhist lineages between China and the Philippines. Returning from thousands of miles away, only for a single petal of heartfelt incense to offer to the ancestral court; With single-minded dedication, I wish to dedicate countless merits to all.
May this supreme merit of morning worship and fasting be used to pray for the Buddha's increasing radiance and the enduring Dharma for long-term abiding; Below, I pray for peace among the seas, world peace, for all sentient beings to be free from suffering and to attain happiness, and for shared attainment of enlightenment.
