02/08/2026

The press conference for the 90th Anniversary Celebration of the Founding of the SENG GUAN TEMPLE in the Philippines, a series of events commemorating the temple's 90th anniversary, was successfully held. The event also highlighted the joint efforts of overseas Chinese monks to usher in a new era.

On August 1, 2026, coinciding with the auspicious day of Guanyin Bodhisattva's enlightenment (the 19th day of the sixth lunar month), the Seng Guan Temple in the Philippines solemnly held a press conference to celebrate its 90th anniversary. Venerable elders, leaders of the Filipino-Chinese community, and dignitaries gathered at the temple to reminisce about its 90 years of propagating Buddhism and officially announced plans for major events including a Water and Land Dharma Assembly, a special exhibition of cultural and historical materials, and a transnational forum for overseas Chinese monks. These events outlined the temple's long-term vision of cultivating the overseas Chinese community and connecting China and the Philippines, and jointly explored new developments in the propagation of Buddhism in Southeast Asia and new cultural exchanges between the two countries.

At the beginning of the press conference, a solemn chanting and blessing ceremony was held at the temple. Venerable Chuan Yin, President of the Buddhist Association of the Philippines, led the congregation in paying homage to the Buddha and offering prayers. The melodious chanting spread throughout the ten directions, praying for good fortune.

Venerable Master Chuanyin gave a compassionate discourse. He reviewed the 90-year history of Seng Guan Temple's cross-sea transmission of Dharma and its deep roots in Southeast Asia, expressing gratitude for the immense merits of past patriarchs who established the temple, provided for the monks, and benefited the overseas Chinese community. The Venerable Master explained that the Water and Land Dharma Assembly is the most auspicious, perfect, and expansive universal salvation assembly in Buddhism, its merits extending to all directions and reaching the three realms of existence. It can protect the nation from disasters, pray for harmony between the two countries, and ensure a bountiful harvest and peace for the people; it can repay the fourfold kindness and remember the virtues and achievements of ancestors; and it can liberate the six realms of the dead, ancestors, and karmic creditors, enabling both the living and the deceased to attain liberation and perfect wisdom and blessings. The Water and Land Dharma Assembly, held to commemorate the temple's 90th anniversary, is a solemn Buddhist ritual to remember the sages, repay the kindness of all, stabilize the hearts of the overseas Chinese community with compassionate power, deepen China-Philippine Buddhist cultural exchanges, and ensure that the Minnan Zen tradition endures in Luzon, with the century-old spirit of compassion passed down through generations.

Venerable Fadu delivered a speech, officially announcing the overall plan for the 90th anniversary celebration, with three core activities to be presented in sequence, integrating religious ceremonies, culture, and public welfare.

Firstly, we will launch the Grand Buddhist Dharma Assembly, which will be solemnly held from October 18th to 25th, 2026. By relying on the Buddha's compassionate power, we pray for the prosperity of the nation, the good neighborliness between China and the Philippines, and the peace and safety of the overseas Chinese community year after year. We will also commemorate the great masters who founded and propagated the Dharma throughout the ages and build good karma with all directions.

Secondly, a special exhibition on the history and culture of the 90th anniversary of the propagation of Buddhism will be held, showcasing precious old photos, documents and calligraphy since the founding of the temple, fully reproducing the century-long journey of overseas monks spreading the Dharma across the sea and taking root in Southeast Asia. At the same time, a gathering of Zen tea, calligraphy and painting and Buddhist music will be held, and historical materials of overseas monks will be collected from the whole society, carefully protecting the overseas Chinese language and Buddhist cultural heritage.

Third, we will implement charitable and public welfare initiatives, regularly visiting communities in Manila to provide free medical consultations and medicines, material assistance, care for the vulnerable, and Buddhist teachings, adhering to the humanitarian spirit of Humanistic Buddhism and giving back to the local Philippine society with practical actions.

At the same time, in his speech, Venerable Fadu outlined the temple's long-term development blueprint. Taking the 90th anniversary as a new starting point, Seng Guan Temple will focus on five major areas: strengthening the Chinese language education in the Philippines, deepening the exchange, mutual learning and integration of Buddhist culture between China and the Philippines, building a regular platform for fellowship among overseas Chinese monks, continuously carrying out public welfare and Dharma propagation activities, and rescuing and organizing historical materials of overseas Chinese monks, so that the compassionate Dharma lineage can be passed down from generation to generation and continue to thrive.

Following the event, distinguished guests from all walks of life took turns to deliver speeches, jointly celebrating the 90th anniversary of the temple and praising the auspicious circumstances and profound significance of this Water and Land Dharma Assembly.

Cai Congmiao, Honorary Director of the Filipino-Chinese Business Association, gave a speech, highly praising Xinyuan Temple for its remarkable contributions over the past ninety years in spreading the Dharma, educating the overseas Chinese community, and supporting education and helping people in need. He also spoke highly of this Water and Land Ceremony, saying its merits are vast and its blessings widespread, and that it will surely bring peace and good vibes to the overseas Chinese community.

Xu Xueyu, vice chairman of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said that Seng Guan Temple has long been a place where overseas Chinese gather together, connect with their hometown, and serve the community. It is a warm spiritual haven for the Filipino-Chinese community. He hopes that through this auspicious Dharma connection, the overseas Chinese community will be protected and their good fortune will endure.

In his address, Philippine Manila District 3 Councilor Liu Shaoqiang affirmed the temple's long-standing commitment to community welfare, promoting ethnic integration, and stabilizing local communities. He also wished the 90th anniversary Water and Land Dharma Assembly a successful and auspicious conclusion, benefiting all beings.

This grand event was a rare and auspicious occasion, with distinguished guests including: Venerable Neng Zhen, Vice President of the Buddhist Federation of the Philippines; Cai Congmiao, Permanent Chairman of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry; Chen Zuchang, Founding President of the Philippine Soong Ching Ling Foundation; Xu Xueyu and Shi Qingwei, Vice Chairmen of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry; Shi Yurong, President of the Federation of Overseas Chinese Business Associations in the Philippines; Cai Zhenzuo, Vice Chairman of the Jinjiang Association of the Philippines; Yao Jinzhen, Honorary Chairman of the Jinjiang Association of the Philippines; Hong Shanyi, Honorary Chairman of the Philippine Alumni Association; Shi Yongjia, Chairman of the Philippine Alumni Association; Wu Yongjian, Chairman of the Philippine Alumni Association; Wang Qinghan, Honorary Chairman of the Philippine Alumni Association; Li Desheng, Vice President of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines; Liu Shaoqiang, Councilor of the Third District of Manila, Philippines; Qiu Juanjuan, Principal of Nengren School in the Philippines; and Wu Yuedan, representative of the 90th Anniversary Celebration benefactors.

For ninety years, the sound of Buddhist chants has never ceased across the sea, and the compassionate spirit of the temple has benefited Southeast Asia. From its founding by Master Xingyuan in 1937 to its expansion by Elder Ruijin, Seng Guan Temple has inherited the Buddhist lineage of southern Fujian, cherished its original aspiration for its hometown, established itself in the Philippines, cultivated deep roots in the overseas Chinese community, and connected both sides of the Taiwan Strait, becoming an important hub for Buddhist exchanges and the inheritance of Chinese culture between China and the Philippines.

This press conference was presided over by Venerable Puxue. The ceremony was solemn, orderly, and perfectly executed. We pray that the 90th anniversary celebration will be a complete success, bringing salvation to all beings through the Water and Land Dharma rites; may the Dharma endure, peace prevail throughout the world, and the friendship between China and the Philippines last forever.

Master Bailin's virtue reaches Southeast Asia, his boundless compassion benefits all beings|Philippine Suwan Temple holds a memorial dharma ceremony for Elder Nun Guangren Bailin's passing anniversary

On July 30, 2026 (the 17th day of the 6th lunar month), the Xiuyan Temple in the Philippines held a grand memorial ceremony for the late Elder Nun Guangren's birthday. Senior monks from home and abroad, lay followers, and devoted supporters gathered at the temple, chanting Sanskrit together, remembering Elder Nun Guangren's lifelong dedication to spreading the Dharma and her compassionate work for the world, and honoring her everlasting contributions to Buddhist exchange between China and the Philippines as well as charitable causes.

Elder Nun Guangren, whose secular surname was Huang and given name Jigu, was born in 1916 in Jinjiang, Fujian. She became a nun at the age of three at Suyan Temple in Quanzhou. In 1958, she crossed the sea to the Philippines, continuing the Dharma lineage of Suyan Temple in Manila. Fulfilling the wishes of Nun Wenlian, she revitalized the Suyan practice center, expanded the halls, and rooted the Minnan Zen tradition in Luzon, establishing the Philippines' well-known nunnery. In 1976, she founded the Wenlian Clinic, pioneering Buddhist charitable medical services in the Philippines. For nearly twenty years, she offered medical treatment and medication to people regardless of nationality or race, benefiting over 200,000 poor individuals. In her later years, she remained deeply attached to her homeland, raising funds in both China and the Philippines to rebuild Suyan Temple in Quanzhou, continuing her charitable medicine work. Throughout her life, she practiced the grand vow of Buddhism to spread the Dharma and benefit all beings, building an important bridge for Buddhist friendship and exchange between China and the Philippines.

This memorial Dharma ceremony is exceptionally auspicious, with respected monks and Dharma protectors from home and abroad attending. Guests include: Elder Chuan Yin, president of the Philippines Buddhist Federation; Vice Presidents of the Philippines Buddhist Federation, Venerable Neng Zhen, Venerable Chuan Chan, and Venerable Dao Yuan; Executive Vice President of the Quanzhou, Fujian Buddhist Association, Venerable Li Ren; Venerable Fa Du; Abbot Chuan Yin of Xihua Rock in Quanzhou, China; Venerable Xing Yin, head of Yuan Guang Temple in Taiwan, China; Venerable Zhen Wen, Deputy Secretary-General of the Quanzhou Buddhist Association; Venerable Xing Bao and Chuan Deng Gu of Su Yan Temple in Quanzhou, China; Venerable Miao Jing and Venerable Ru Qing of Fo Guang Shan Wan Lian Temple in Manila, Philippines; Venerable Chuan Long of Su Yan Temple in Manila, Philippines; Mr. Wu Rong Shou, representative from Wen Lian Clinic at Su Yan Temple in Manila, Philippines; Mr. Yao Yong Sheng, Vice President and Secretary-General of Quanzhou Buddhist Association in Fujian, and representatives from the board and supervisory committee of Su Yan Temple in Manila, as well as Dharma protectors and devotees from various places.

The Dharma assembly ceremony was solemn and dignified, with representatives from the Dharma family, clinics, the temple board, prominent Buddhist figures in the country, and Elder Chuan Yin, president of the Philippine Buddhist Federation, each giving speeches in turn. People from all walks of life fondly recalled Elder Guangren’s pure monastic conduct, his indifference to fame and profit, and his lifelong dedication to helping others, appreciating how he devoted himself to the Philippines while keeping his homeland in mind, warming countless beings with his compassionate deeds. Many attendees expressed that they would carry on Elder Guangren’s compassionate legacy, continue to promote Sino-Philippine Buddhist charitable work, strengthen the Dharma ties between China and the Philippines, and foster cultural exchanges between the two regions.

To honor the late Elder Guangren Ni, many temples in the Philippines have offered flower baskets as a tribute, including: the Philippine Buddhist Federation, Manila Mahayana Xinyuan Temple, Sanbao Yanfuquan Temple in the Philippines, Davao Longhua Temple, Xuefeng Temple in Nan'an, Quanzhou, China, Cebu Puxian Temple in the Philippines, Manila Huazang Temple, Putuo Temple, Puji Temple, Fakong Temple, Lianhua Temple, Buddhist Lay Association, Hushengyuan, Lingjiu Temple, Miaode Chan Temple, Tianlian Temple, Tianzhu Hermitage, Yinxi Temple, Haiyin Temple, Yuantong Temple, Danlu Puxi Temple, Guanyin Temple, and Tianlian Temple in Quanzhou, China.

Although Elder Nun has passed away, her compassionate spirit remains, and her good deeds for the world continue. The incense at Suyan Temple still burns as before, the goodwill of Wenlian Clinic goes on, and the bridge for Buddhist exchanges between China and the Philippines continues endlessly, thanks to her steadfast dedication.

A century of benevolent wind, forever continuing among people; a single thought of a lotus heart, shining long in the land of Buddha. May Elder Guangren of Ni Lian Tai rest in high peace and return with fulfilled vows; may the followers of Buddhism carry on their aspirations and practice their deeds, using compassion as the boat and kind thoughts as the sail, continuing the great work of spreading Dharma and benefiting living beings, passing down the pure and simple family traditions, letting this century-spanning compassion and warmth keep flowing, bringing long-lasting blessings.

Uniting Wisdom to Strengthen the Foundation of Chinese Education, Joining Hands to Inherit Chinese Cultural Heritage | The Philippine Manila Chinese Education Association 2025-2026 Annual Meeting Was Successfully Held at the Seng Guan Temple Conference Center

On July 19, 2026, the 2025–2026 annual meeting of the Manila Chinese Education Association was grandly held at the Seng Guan Temple Conference Center in the Philippines. The event was fully sponsored by Seng Guan Temple, which offered the venue, logistics, and full support for free. It provided a high-quality platform for Chinese education research and exchange in the Philippines, strengthened the local Chinese teaching team, continued the overseas Chinese cultural heritage, and deepened cultural and friendly exchanges between China and the Philippines.

Congratulations! Principal Qiu Juanjuan of Neng Ren High School, founded by the Mahayana Xinyuan Temple in the Philippines, has been elected this year as the 12th president of the Metro Manila Chinese Education Association, continuing to lead Chinese education in the Filipino-Chinese community into a new stage. Neng Ren High School was established in 1960 by the Mahayana Xinyuan Temple in the Philippines. For more than sixty years since its founding, it has been deeply cultivating Chinese education in the Philippines, committed to promoting Chinese culture and nurturing talented overseas Chinese youth, making it a long-standing and influential Chinese school in the Filipino-Chinese community.

Mahayana Xinyuan Temple has been deeply rooted in the Filipino-Chinese community for a long time, always upholding the public-minded mission of promoting education and passing down traditions. For decades, it has actively supported education, selflessly aiding the development of Chinese education, and has long opened up its facilities for public use, strongly supporting various teacher training and academic exchange activities within the Filipino-Chinese community. This year, the annual conference is being held at the conference center, making use of the temple’s serene and solemn environment along with its well-equipped facilities, creating a professional learning space for education experts, school leaders, and frontline Chinese language teachers from home and abroad, effectively promoting the improvement, efficiency, and innovative development of Filipino-Chinese education.

The annual meeting's opening ceremony was solemn and orderly. The newly appointed president of the Greater Manila Chinese Schools Association and principal of Nengren High School, Qiu Juanjuan, gave the opening speech, followed by remarks from guests including Yang Fan, Deputy Secretary-General of the Sichuan Overseas Friendship Association, and Huang Duanming, Chairman of the Philippine Chinese Education Center. President Qiu expressed her gratitude to Dasheng Xinyuan Temple for its long-standing selfless support of Chinese-language education among Filipinos, thanking the temple for continuously empowering teachers through providing venues, resources, and charitable support, helping to strengthen the roots of overseas Chinese culture. She stated that Chinese education is a core mission for continuing the cultural heritage of overseas Chinese communities, building a bridge of friendship between China and the Philippines, and nurturing the next generation of friendly relations between the two countries. In the future, the association will focus on improving teacher quality and steadily promoting high-quality development of Chinese education in the Philippines.

This annual conference focuses closely on frontline teaching challenges and industry development trends, offering three high-level specialized lectures that are professional, innovative, and practical. Professor Li Jian from Sichuan Normal University presented on "Teacher Professional Growth and School-Based Training — Perspectives from Chinese Language Classroom Teaching and Management," providing systematic guidance on school operation, school-based research, and classroom optimization for Filipino-Chinese schools and teacher development. Professor Liu Xiang from the School of Education Science at Sichuan Normal University led participants in exploring "AI Empowering Chinese Language Teaching," delving into ways to integrate digital technology with Chinese classrooms, helping Filipino-Chinese education stay up-to-date and innovate teaching methods.

In the afternoon, Associate Professor Li Yuanyuan gave a talk titled 'Learning Chinese Through Play: Applying Classic Chinese Kindergarten Language Games in Chinese Teaching in the Philippines.' She precisely addressed issues like the dullness of Chinese classes for young learners and their lack of interest, providing plenty of fun teaching methods that can be used right away, giving frontline teachers practical guidance to improve teaching quality and efficiency. During the event, school representatives held a working committee meeting to review the current state of Chinese education, discuss challenges in running schools, exchange teaching experiences, and plan for the year’s development.

The annual meeting closing ceremony was successfully held, with attending guests giving their summary speeches one by one. The formal oath-taking for the 12th batch of staff was completed on-site, and Qiu Juanjuan took office as the president of the Chinese Education Association of Greater Manila. In her closing speech, she said that in the future, she will closely coordinate with Daxing Xinyuan Temple, the Filipino-Chinese Education Center, and educational resources at home and abroad, continuing to use the temple's public welfare platform for regular teacher training and teaching seminars. Taking Neng Ren High School as a pilot example, she plans to actively promote innovative models like AI teaching and gamified classrooms to improve the overall standard of Filipino-Chinese education.

At the end of the conference, honorary certificates were awarded, and each unit exchanged commemorative gifts, bringing the event to a successful close. Da Cheng Xin Yuan Temple stated that it will continue to uphold its original commitment to cultural and educational public welfare, keep its venues open, improve supporting facilities, and fully cooperate with the Chinese Education Association in all aspects of teacher training and cultural heritage work. It aims to deeply cultivate Chinese education in the Philippines, strengthen cultural roots, build a solid bridge for China-Philippines cultural exchange, nurture more goodwill ambassadors between the two countries, and contribute lasting support to the future friendship between China and the Philippines and the new development of Chinese education in the Philippines.
