Lay Dominican Fraternity - St. John the Baptist Chapter

Lay Dominican Fraternity - St. John the Baptist Chapter We are men and women, living our Christian life by following in the charism of St. Dominic. There are many ways of being a Dominican.

From the beginning of the Order, men and women felt moved to help Dominicโ€™s mission of preaching and join in as they could while still living with their families or continuing in their way of life. Already by the end of the thirteenth century, these friends of the Order and groups of lay people who resonated with Dominican spirituality were invited to become officially aggregated to the Order by a

dopting a Rule of Life approved by the Master of the Order and suited to their circumstances. By adopting the Rule, lay Dominicans committed not only to living holy lives and doing works of charity, but also to being a part of the preaching mission of the Order:

They have as their vocation to radiate the presence of Christ in the midst of the peoples so that the divine message of salvation be known and accepted everywhere by the whole of humankind. (from the Rule of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic)

Todayโ€™s Lay Dominican Fraternities around the world are direct descendents of these early groups. In addition there are many other types of groups of lay people associated with the Order, including the International Dominican Youth Movement, with groups around the world who belong to the movement in different ways; Dominican Volunteers International, where faithful lay people join in the preaching mission of a particular Dominican community full time for a year or more, working with those who are poor or excluded; and associate programs of friends of many individual congregations of sisters, nuns and priories.

The Lay Dominican Fraternity - St. John the Baptist Chapter is composed mostly of members of the Letran Community though all are welcome who wish to deepen their Christian vocation by following the path traced by Saint Dominic de Guzman. Our Chapter is under the patronage of St. John the Baptist, for whom the Colegio de San Juan de Letran is named.

ICYMI...

The Lay Dominican Fraternity of St. John the Baptist - Manila recently visited the San Lorenzo Ruiz Home for the Elderly, (February 17, 2026) which is under the loving care of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

The Home currently looks after around 44 elderly residents, and the Letran Lay Dominicans brought donations to help support their daily needs.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous benefactors who helped make this meaningful outreach possible: Willie Chiam and family, Edita Sua, Beth Tan, Paulette Romualdez, Marilyn Tan, Remegia Horlador and the Letran Youth for Christ - Basic Education Department.

May our good Lord continue to bless all our benefactors for their kindness and generosity in making this endeavor a success.

January 29

Blessed Villana deโ€™Botti OP
(1332-1361)
Widow, Mother, Penitent, Mystic, Lay Dominican

She was gifted with visions of Our Lady and of the Saints and was granted the gift of prophecy. Born in 1332 in Florence, Italy and died on 29 January 1361 of natural causes.

Villana deโ€™Botti was born in 1332 in Florence in the Tuscany region of central Italy. She was the daughter of the rich Florentine merchant Andrea di Lapo deโ€™Botti. As a child she was exceptionally pious and, at the age of thirteen, she ran away from home to enter a Convent. But her father objected to this and had her brought back. Not long after, in July 1351 he had her married to Rosso di Piero Benintendi.

After she married, she seemed completely transformed. She indulged herself completely in worldliness and vanity and even debauchery. But it is said that one day she was going out dressed in a beautiful dress adorned with pearls and precious stones. She looked in the mirror, but instead of her own reflection, she saw a demon (another version says she saw her stained soul). The same image appeared in a second and a third mirror. Immediately Villana repented of her sins, her vices and evil habits. She tore off her dress and put on the simplest outfit she could find. She then went to the Dominican Church of Santa Maria Novella and made a general Confession. Not long after, she joined the Dominican Tertiaries.

Her conversion was complete but she remained faithful to her marital duties. However, she spent all her free time in prayer and reading spiritual literature, studying โ€” especially the biographies of Saints and St Paul โ€˜s letters and, she made great progress in the spiritual life. She tried to beg for the poor in the streets but was prevented from doing so by her horrified family. She appears to have had visions and ecstasies, and despite opposition in certain camps, she was locally venerated as a saint even before she died. After she became a widow, she had to endure slander from some of her companions.

She died on 29 January 1361 in Florence while the words from the Passion of Christ: โ€œHe bowed his head and gave up His spiritโ€ were read to her at her request. (The painting below depicts Bl. Villana and companions mourning the Death of our Saviour).

Her body was carried to the Church of Santa Maria Novella, where it was besieged for a month by large crowds who fought to get hold of pieces of her clothing and made it impossible for any burial to take place.

She is buried there in a marble tomb made by Bernardo Rossellino. She was Beatified on 27 March 1824 when her cult was confirmed by Pope Leo XII (1823-1829).

Saint Thomas Aquinas, OP
January 28

St. Thomas Aquinas OP (c. 1225? โ€“ 7 March 1274) was an Italian Dominican friar and priest, theologian, and philosopher. He is considered one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Catholic theology and Western philosophy.

Thomas was a proponent of natural theology and the father of a school of thought (encompassing both theology and philosophy) known as Thomism. He argued that God is the source of the light of natural reason and the light of faith.

He embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. He has been described as "the most influential thinker of the medieval period" and "the greatest of the medieval philosopher-theologians". Thomas Aquinas's philosophy influenced modern virtue ethics, aesthetics, and cognitive theory.

Thomas's best-known works are the unfinished Summa Theologica, or Summa Theologiae (1265โ€“1274), the Disputed Questions on Truth (1256โ€“1259) and the Summa contra Gentiles (1259โ€“1265). His commentaries on Christian Scripture and on Aristotle also form an important part of his body of work. He is also notable for his Eucharistic hymns, which form a part of the Church's liturgy.

As a Doctor of the Church, Thomas is considered one of the Catholic Church's greatest theologians and philosophers. He is known in Catholic theology as the Doctor Angelicus ("Angelic Doctor", with the title "doctor" meaning "teacher"), and the Doctor Communis ("Universal Doctor"). In 1999, Pope John Paul II added a new title to these traditional ones: Doctor Humanitatis ("Doctor of Humanity/Humaneness").
