Isa pang pangakong natupad: UdM, may fiscal autonomy na!

Tulad ng ipinangako ko sa pagsisimula pa lamang ng aking panunungkulan, nilagdaan ko na ang Ordinansa na nagkakaloob ng fiscal autonomy sa Universidad de Manila (UdM) pagkaraan ng 25 taon bilang isang Higher Educational Institution (HEI).

Ang magandang balitang ito ang sasalubong sa muling pagbubukas ng UdM para sa school year 2020-2021 kahit tayo ay nasa gitna ng pandemya.

Maraming salamat po sa ating mga katuwang sa Manila City Council sa pangunguna ni Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan sa pagkakapasa ng Ordinance No. 8635 na nag-amyenda sa original charter ng UdM.

Batay sa Ordinance No. 8635: "UdM shall be treated as an independent and institutional department of the City of Manila wherein the management of fiscal, human resources, and all other assets shall be within its control."

Naalala ninyo ang sabi ko noon? Let the educational institutions owned by the city government run by the academicians and not by politicians.

Kaya hangarin po natin na ang UdM sa pamamagitan ng bagong Ordinansa na ito, katulad ng Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), ay higit pang maging epektibo sa paglinang ng kaisipan at karakter ng mga Batang Maynila tungo sa isang produktibo at responsableng Manilenyo at bilang isang Filipino.

NEWS FEATURE: UdM says 2020 graduates will still have commencement rites in 2021

The commencement rites for Universidad de Manila (UdM) graduates for batch 2020 will be scheduled next year, UdM President Malou Tiquia has announced.

In a press release, the UdM President announced that virtual commencement rites will be scheduled on Monday, June 29, but live commencement rites will also be held for the graduates in 2021.

The virtual graduation was initially recommended by UdM Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ronald A. Herrera, wherein the said ceremony will be livestreamed in various social media platforms handled by UdM.

"COVID-19 has made all of us adapt to the new norm but there are things that we will continually pursue and one of these is to honor college graduates because this is an event that happens once in a lifetime," Malou Tiquia said.

The University's Board of Regents approved both the virtual graduation of Batch 2020, as well as the participation of Batch 2020 in the 2021 graduation rites.

"The Batch 2020 graduates have also been assured of the participation in the traditional march for Batch 2021 on June 2021," Tiquia added.

About 1,306 graduates will graduate from the nine colleges of UdM in the said virtual graduation. On the other hand, UdM's Latin honorees will attend the graduation rites on June 29 consisting of 14 cm laude graduates and 4 magna cm laude graduates.

"In the tradition of higher education institutions, we have likewise amended the criteria for these so that Latin honor awardees represent the best from among the students," Tiquia said.

UdM is a local university, exclusive to the youth of the City of Manila, positioned as the Education 4.0 hub of the City. It operates two campuses with the main at the historic Mehan Garden and its downtown campus at the old Clover Theater located at Carlos Palanca Jr. St. -JKG
