From a Historic Photograph to a Living Tradition: The Enthronement of the Virgen del Pilar at the Altar Mayor
Reviving a Century-Old Tradition
This historic photograph offers a remarkable glimpse into the devotion to Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Santa Cruz at the old Santa Cruz Church in Manila.
Taken during the Fiesta de la Virgen del Pilar in 1913, the photograph shows the Altar Mayor magnificently adorned for the celebration, with an elaborate ceremonial canopy, abundant fresh flowers, and the image of the Virgen del Pilar enthroned at the center of the sanctuary. The grandeur of the decoration reflects not simply the festive character of the occasion, but the deep affection and devotion of the people of Santa Cruz toward their beloved Patroness.
For generations, the Fiesta del Pilar was a moment when the Virgen was solemnly placed in a place of honor at the Altar Mayor, becoming the visible heart and focus of the parish’s celebration.
More than a century later, this beautiful tradition is being given new life.
A Tradition Revived
In 2025, the Basilica revived the tradition of the solemn enthronement of Nuestra Señora del Pilar at the Altar Mayor during the celebration of her annual fiesta.
The revival was more than a restoration of an old ceremonial practice. It was an act of remembrance—an acknowledgment that the present Basilica continues a story of faith that has been handed down through generations.
The old photograph reminds us that the devotion we celebrate today is not something newly created. It belongs to a much older spiritual heritage of Santa Cruz.
October 9, 2026: Continuing the Heritage
On October 9, 2026, the Basilica Minor de Nuestra Señora del Pilar will once again solemnly enthrone the Virgen del Pilar at the Altar Mayor.
This year’s enthronement will have an even deeper significance: it will signal the beginning of the Basilica Minor’s Novena in preparation for the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Pilar on the Third Sunday of October -18,2026
As the image of the Virgen is once again placed at the center of the sanctuary, the Basilica Minor will be reconnecting the present generation with the generations who came before us.
The same Mother who was honored at the Altar Mayor in the celebrations of the past is once again welcomed to her place of honor.
A Living Heritage
The historic photograph of 1913 and the enthronement of 2026 are separated by more than a century, yet they speak of the same devotion.
The flowers may change.
The decorations may change.
The generations may change.
But the love of the people of Santa Cruz for the Virgen del Pilar remains.
The enthronement is therefore not merely a ceremonial decoration of the Altar Mayor. It is a living tradition, a visible expression that the Virgen del Pilar continues to occupy a special place in the spiritual life of Santa Cruz.
From the old Santa Cruz Church of 1913 to the Minor Basilica of today, the devotion continues.
And as the Virgen del Pilar returns once more to the Altar Mayor on October 9, 2026, we are reminded that we are not beginning a new story—we are continuing a story that our forebears entrusted to us.
