Today, October 4, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved saints in the history of the Church and the patron saint of Italy, animals, ecology, and the environment.🙏
But behind the familiar image of the saint surrounded by birds and animals is a man who radically chose to follow Jesus Christ and the Gospel.
Francis was born into a wealthy family in Assisi, Italy. As a young man, he enjoyed a comfortable life and dreamed of becoming a knight. He was known for his love of celebrations, friends, and worldly pleasures.
But God had something greater in store for him.
After experiencing illness and a period of deep reflection, Francis began to see that the life he had been pursuing could never completely satisfy his heart. He turned toward prayer and slowly discovered a new purpose: to give everything to Christ.
One of the most important moments in his life happened when he encountered a l***r.
Previously, Francis had found l***rs difficult to approach. Yet, moved by God's grace, he overcame his fear, approached the man, and embraced him.
That moment became a turning point.
What once seemed bitter became sweet.
Francis began to understand that following Jesus meant loving not only the people who were easy to love, but also reaching out to those whom society often ignored.
Then, while praying before the crucifix at the neglected chapel of San Damiano, Francis heard Christ's call:
“Francis, go and repair my house, which is falling into ruin.”
At first, Francis understood the words literally and began repairing the chapel. But eventually, he came to understand the deeper call: Christ was inviting him to help renew His Church through a life of radical poverty, humility, service, and Gospel living.
Francis eventually gave up his possessions and embraced a life of poverty.
He chose to live simply, preach the Gospel, serve the poor, and follow Christ without seeking wealth, comfort, or recognition.
People mocked him. Some thought he was foolish. Others could not understand why someone who had come from a wealthy family would willingly choose poverty.
But Francis continued.
He did not simply preach the Gospel.
He tried to live it.
His first rule for his followers was drawn from the words of the Gospel itself. His life became a visible reminder that Christianity is not merely about knowing what Jesus taught—it is about having the courage to live what Jesus taught.
Francis eventually gathered followers, and the movement that began with one poor man from Assisi became the Franciscan family, one of the great spiritual traditions in the Catholic Church.
He also had a deep love for creation, seeing the beauty of God's presence reflected in His creatures.
In his famous Canticle of the Creatures, Francis praised God through the sun, moon, stars, water, fire, earth, and even death.
For Francis, creation was not something to worship. Rather, it was a reason to praise the Creator.
His life was also marked by suffering. During his final years, he became seriously ill and lost much of his eyesight. Two years before his death, he received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ in his hands, feet, and side.
Yet even in suffering, Francis continued to praise God.
Near the end of his life, he welcomed even death as “Sister Death,” trusting completely in the Lord whom he had spent his entire life loving and serving.
Saint Francis died in 1226 at the age of 44.
His life continues to speak to us today because he reminds us of something simple but challenging:
We do not need to have much to give much.
We do not need to be powerful to make a difference.
We do not need to be famous to become holy.
Sometimes, God simply asks us to love more deeply, live more simply, forgive more generously, serve those in need, and become less concerned with ourselves.
BE LIKE SAINT FRANCIS.
Choose simplicity over excess.
Choose generosity over selfishness.
Choose humility over pride.
Choose compassion over indifference.
Choose peace over conflict.
Choose love over hatred.
And above all, choose Christ. ❤️
May we learn from Saint Francis to see Christ in the poor, the forgotten, the suffering, and those who need our kindness.
May we care for God's creation—not because creation is God, but because everything created reminds us of the goodness of the Creator.
And may our lives become, like Francis' life, a living Gospel that people can see not only through our words but through the way we love and serve.
