Hiraya

Hiraya We will be the voice of the voiceless. We will be all ears to the unheard. We will empower the powerless.

HIRAYA is a safe haven for the oppressed that promotes gender equality, gender sensitivity, gender awareness, and diversity in the society that seeks to achieve equality and collective respect and dignity towards the Bedan community. It started in 2012, when Hiraya was first just a group of homosexual students who wanted their rights to be heard against discrimination. There were a lot of conflict

s & rejections but it didn’t become a hindrance to the students. The organization rebranded its advocacy, from the LGBT community to a gender sensitive organization that builds their stand to reach out more to all sexes instead of just the LGBT community. The organization’s intention is to raise awareness to the Bedan community about their rights for the reason that the world is constantly changing; different people, different faces, different personalities. This organization consists of people with distinctive sexual orientation coming from different departments within San Beda College. Hiraya was first accredited by the Office of the Prefect of Student Affairs last 2014 as an organization that promotes gender sensitivity, awareness, gender equality and diversity in the society. This organization is continuing its legacy to develop the activities to unify, strengthen and maintain the peaceful environment of San Beda College for the students, and to fully accept and support its vision-mission:

- To hone its members that will cultivate social responsibility and awareness.
- To help its members provide a safe haven for the oppressed
- To inherit the Benedictine values of Ora et Labora – Prayer and Work
- To support the school’s vision, in becoming fully human, wholly Christian, truly Filipino and Globally Competitive; and
- To transform the whole community

Hiraya is rebranded in to Avana to start from scratch and remove the impression of the people who thinks this organization is only for the LGBTQIA+ community. We are broadening our scope and we are aiming to help not just a specific group of people, but everyone who needs us. HIRAYA wants to build, develop and maintain a society that consists of RESPECT, EQUALITY and FREEDOM.

2016 ended on a remarkably-high note for the SOGIE Equality Bill, where all related bills were consolidated and approved in the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality. This is one of the farthest points a version of the Anti-Discrimination Bill has come close to passage.

2017 not only brings in new hope but also a new fight. While we wait for the bill to be calendared for its second reading, we enjoin you to stand with us in this campaign.

Let's translate this collective dream into reality. Together, we can create a culture of acceptance and respect for Filipinos for the years to come.

For a copy of the BILL, you may check the full document here: http://bit.ly/HB51_AntiDiscrimination.

We are who we are, no matter how hard we try to fit into the mold that society has set for us. Be completely honest to allow yourself to know who you really are and be liberated enough to let everyone know. You don't owe anyone an explanation but you owe it to yourself to express your true self. We are given a chance to choose and become who we want to be, don't put it to waste by suppressing it.

"Salot, malas, abnormal — in this supposedly progressive times, stereotyping is still well-used especially towards the minority groups. Everybody envisions the world we have now as accepting, nurturing, and full of out-of-the-box thinkers. But it seems as though sometimes it is the opposite. People are labeled "different" or an "anomaly" when they refuse to conform to society's standards, when they break free from the molds set by the majority, and when they tear apart the label others have given them and make a new one for themselves. This is why HIRAYA exists. We'd like people to allow themselves to stop caging themselves in — get out there and do what you're good at regardless of what others might say. You do you, don't let other people tell you otherwise."
