The UST History Society joins the Filipino nation as we mourn the passing of historian, literary critic, and National Artist for Literature—𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹 𝗕. 𝗠𝗼𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀.

Dr. Mojares is esteemed for his academic works and great contributions to the fields of Philippine history and literature. He was an outstanding figure in local studies, having been the founding director of the University of San Carlos Cebuano Studies Center.

Among his distinguished works are titles such as Origins and Rise of the Filipino Novel: A Generic Study of the Novel Until 1940 (1983), Theater in Society, Society in Theater: Social History of a Cebuano Village, 1840–1940 (1985), The War Against the Americans: Resistance and Collaboration in Cebu Province (1999), Waiting for Mariang Makiling: Essays in Philippine Cultural History (2002), Interrogations in Philippine Cultural History: The Ateneo de Manila Lectures (2017), and many more.

In 2018, Dr. Mojares was named National Artist for Literature in recognition of his honorable contributions to the scholarly development of the discipline.

The History Society extends its sincerest condolences to Dr. Mojares’ bereaved loved ones. We are one with the academic community in forever remembering the legacies of the great historian that Dr. Mojares was.

Tuwing huling Lunes ng buwan ng Agosto, ipinagdiriwang ng Pilipinas ang 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗶, isang pagpupugay para sa mga dakilang nag-alay ng dugo, pawis, at buhay alang-alang sa kalayaan at kaunlaran ng bayan. 🦅

First declared a holiday in 1931 as enacted by the Philippine Legislature under Act No. 3827, National Heroes Day was originally celebrated every last Sunday of August. The date and conditions of this specific celebration have been modified for a number of times throughout the years. Now, it is by virtue of Republic Act No. 9492 that we celebrate National Heroes Day every last Monday of August. Through multiple revisions and amendments, the holiday remained true to its purpose. This day is now a conclusion to National History Month which is dedicated to commemorating the narratives and experiences that essentially built the Philippines as we know it today. We end the month by honoring the people who devoted their work and their lives for the sake of independence, freedom, and nation-building. Be their names unknown or carved on monuments, we celebrate all who have contributed to this cause—the heroes of the Philippines.

Nawa’y magsilbi ang araw na ito bilang paalala sa lahat na, tulad ng ating mga huwarang bayani, mag-ukol ng kagitingan at pag-ibig para sa isang malaya at maunlad na Pilipinas. ☀️❤️

LOOK: UST Department of History and UST History Society host “Hinubog ng Bayan, Dinuyan ng Alon: A History Seminar”

On August 27th (Thursday), at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC) Auditorium, the Department of History, in collaboration with the UST History Society, celebrated National History Month by looking back on the Department’s growth since its foundation. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of the BA in History program offered in the University of Santo Tomas.

A mass preceded the official program, led by the Faculty of Arts and Letters Regent, Rev. Fr. George Phe Mang, O.P., SThL. The celebratory event presented first-hand accounts of the Department’s origins, its development, and how it fostered students—including now faculty members. Additionally, discussions occurred on the University's historical significance and its role in cultural heritage preservation.
