Today, January 1st, is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

The title “Mother of God” goes back to the third or fourth century, but the Greek term Theotokos (“The God-bearer”) was officially consecrated as Catholic doctrine at the Council of Ephesus in 431, thus becoming the first Marian dogma. At the end of the Council of Ephesus, crowds of people marched through the streets shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!”

This Catholic doctrine is based on the doctrine of Incarnation, as expressed by St. Paul: “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4).

In its chapter on Mary’s role in the Church, Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution “Lumen Gentium” (“Light of the People”) calls Mary “Mother of God” 12 times.

On this day the Catholic Church also celebrates the World Day of Peace, a tradition established by Pope Paul VI and confirmed by Pope John Paul II.

We celebrate the anniversary of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network and the feast day of our patron, St. Francis Xavier.

He taught us that "a joyful heart and a kind face open doors to the Gospel." With that same joy, we present the 2025 Prayer and Service Magazine. It is a publication that gathers what we have lived and prayed during this year, and invites us to look with hope at the path opening towards 2026.

Happy St. Francis Xavier's Day! ✨

St. Francis Xavier was known for being an energetic, lively man, and above all, one with a tender heart. He himself left us a fundamental piece of advice for mission and for life:

"Converse with everyone, with a cheerful countenance, neither embarrassed nor severe; because if they saw you serious and sad, many, out of fear, will fail to benefit from you; therefore be affable and benign."

A joyful heart and a kind face open doors to the Gospel.

On this special day, let us unite in prayer. Let us ask our Patron Saint to inspire this spirit of kindness and authentic joy in all members of the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network and its youth branch, the EYM - Eucharistic Youth Movement.
