BENEFITS OF NYEN NE (24hour) VOW OBSERVANCE

"Take the 5 Great Rivers like the Ganges and so on, meeting in a
great, vast ocean. It is impossible to quantify that amount into
vases. But it is more possible to put all those water into 100, 1000,
10,000 and so on vases, than to quantify the merit resulting from
observing one day of the Nyen Ne vow. ||

Imagine this universe is filled with Arhats and you offer to each of
them the best jewels, excellent medicine, food, clothing and
bedding, everyday of one’s human life from birth to death. The
great merit from that generosity is smaller than 1/10,000 (one
ten-thousandth) of the merit obtained from observing just one day
of the Nyen Ne vow."

We, samsaric beings, are like wet firewood, while the Buddha's compassion is like the sun's rays, and the qualified teacher's instructions the magnifying glass. Practicing Ngondro diligently is like drying the firewood.

The drier the firewood, the easier it is to catch fire through the sun's rays and the focus of the magnifying glass. If the firewood remains wet, it will not catch fire, however strong the sun's rays are.

Pray that we may receive teachings, meet the right master, and practice diligently in this precious human life.

Last Sunday April 5, we did Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva puja in the morning, as per our regular schedule of praying Bodhisattva on the first Sunday of the month.

In the afternoon, the ordained monks conducted 100 Deities Puja and Sur ritual for Ching Ming Tomb Sweeping Festival.

Yesterday, we received the 24 hour Nyen Ne Mahayana 8 Precepts before sunrise. We included the minor vow of keeping complete silence.

In the morning after breakfast, we recited the Avalokiteshvara prayer, praise and prostrated. After the morning break, we continued with another session until lunch.

Lunch was a sumptuous meal of J*p Chae vegetarian noodles, dumplings and donuts.

In the afternoon, we completed another round of prayers. Khenpo kindly bestowed preliminary teachings on Sukhavati and the Aspiration to be Reborn in Sukhavati prayer by Karma Chagme Rinpoche.

By the afternoon break, we were tired since participants were already present by 5am.

For the final session, we recited Avalokiteshvara prayer, Sukhavati short prayers and received the 'oral transmission' of the Dechen Monlam from Khenpo Tashi.

We capped the day off at 5 in the afternoon, went our ways, and continued preserving our vow until this morning's sunrise.
