February 11 was supposed to be a normal day for this young girl residing in the French countryside. A typical day started with breakfast, followed by chores during the morning, playtime for the rest of the afternoon, dinner and finally, night prayers and bedtime. However, this February day was going to be different for this young woman. What transpired on this day would give rise to a devotion upon which thousands of faithful would lift up their prayers to Almighty God through Her intercession.

Bernadette Soubirous did not expect to behold the Mother of God in the midst of accomplishing her chores. Her mother asked that she head for a spring located at the outskirts of town to fetch water. Upon reaching the spring, she saw a dazzling ray of light emanating from an abnormally shaped cavity carved out from rock. She can see from that light an outline of a “small young lady” with her hands clasped in prayer. At first, Bernadette attributed the apparition as paranormal in origin. On her next visit to the spring, she armed herself with prayers and holy water but was again struck with fear upon seeing the Lady standing in the grotto in all her splendor. This time, the Lady gently assured Bernadette that she has nothing to fear and invited her to pray the rosary. The Lady appeared to Bernadette for 17 more instances and on the final apparition, she revealed her true identity: “Que soy era Immaculada Counceptiou” (I am the Immaculate Conception). The site of the apparitions at Lourdes is now a place of pilgrimage where the faithful can bring home miraculous water flowing from the spring where the Virgin Mary stood.

The messages of Lourdes are one of penance and the love of God. Mary asked Bernadette to eat mud and herbs during one of the apparitions, to which she obliged. To her neighbors, she looked mentally deranged. To her parents, she was an embarrassment. But to God, she showed how deep His love was for all humanity. Consuming earthen material symbolizes how God, in all His might, stooped down to the level of a lowly mortal being and lived among us. Bernadette had a glimpse of what Jesus Christ had to undergo to manifest the love of God to all who come to believe in Him. The Virgin also emphasized the need for penance among the faithful. This has never been more relevant today. Secularism has taken hold of society and values that we Christians have held dear for centuries are being discarded for the sake of progress and inclusivity. Now more than ever we need to beg God for mercy not only for our personal sins, but also for those who have rejected Him to chase after modern “doctrines”. Mary also encourages Bernadette to look forward to life after our earthly pilgrimage. She promised “happiness not in this world, but in the other”. In a society where men and women chase after wealth, fame and glory, Mary reminds us that true happiness can only be found in communion with God.

As we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, let us remember to always acknowledge the love of God in our lives. Never forget to repent of our sins, and always look forward to life with God in heaven. “O Mary conceived without original sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee”.

Two events are commemorated today. We celebrate first and foremost the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple; the final feast involving Our Lord’s infancy after Christmas Day. We recall Our Lord who comes to His people, symbolized by Simeon and Anna. Simeon, now seeing the Child, blesses God and gives Him thanks as he says: “Let your servant go in peace!” His life is fulfilled!

We also celebrate the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mosaic law prescribes that after a woman gives birth to her firstborn, she should present her child in the Temple forty days after giving birth for the ritual purification. Although a feast of the Lord, the Office of this day has a Marian character.

When our Lord was presented in the temple, He brought light. He brought light to the nations by his coming. Such light that brings joy, manifest in the two sages in the temple. Him who is Light from Light enlightens all through the Gospel, motivates people from all races and walks of life to a change of heart. One who has encountered the Gospel cannot go back to a life of wordliness and vice. The candles blessed in today’s Mass is a concrete reminder for us to keep ourselves pure and holy, like the wax of the candle, and motivated by the graces we receive from Him who illuminates us, we illuminate the world with the witness of the Gospel.

Let us always bring joy to our world full of confusion by bringing Christ to others, faithful one. Stay faithful and fill this world with the fragrance of Christ!

Tomorrow is Vigil Day... in a time of quarantine.

Take a look of these things you need to know about making the Vigil online, Crusaders!

How to?
1. Examine your conscience, meditation on the passion of Jesus, and make an Act of Perfect Contrition.
2. Follow along live streams of Holy Mass, if possible and make an Act of Spiritual Communion on both days, in the spirit of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
3. Pray the Rosary, meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life. Pray the Nine Offices, if you have the prayerbook, or follow along in the livestreams.
4. Adore the Blessed Sacrament, for at least an hour. Much better if you can do it overnight.

Act of Perfect Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry and beg pardon for all my sins, not so much because these sins bring suffering and Hell to me, but because they have crucified my loving Savior Jesus Christ and offended Your Infinite Goodness. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart. I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

As the Church commemorates today the feast and martyrdom of St. Stephen, we are called to imitate his example of having filled with faith and fortitude. He was stoned to death outside the Holy City of Jerusalem two years after the Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through his martyrdom, he imitated the example of Christ Himself.

Stephen carved a pathway for future and modern martyrs like Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul, Andrew, Mark, Bartholomew, Thomas More, Bl. Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. and many more. He was the one who truly pioneered and exemplified Christian martyrdom which was spreading the Word of God to the lost sheep unto death.

St. Stephen the Protomartyr, pray for us!

The day of the Lord is here! In the ancestral city of King David, Bethlehem, the city of bread, God comes to us. He came down from heaven, and became a helpless babe for us. What great mystery!

As we enjoy the revels of Christmas Day, may we pause a while to remember this great event in the history of our salvation. Let us also, on this day, receive Our Lord into our hearts at Holy Mass.

Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, almighty God, that the new birth, in the flesh, of thy only-begotten Son may deliver us whom the bo***ge of old keeps under the yoke of sin. Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

From the moment of her conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary was without original sin. Hence, she is rightfully called Immaculate. This doctrine was held by many Catholics for centuries before its solemn definition by Pope Bl. Pius IX in 1854.

It is but fitting that the one who would give birth to God Incarnate would herself be sinless. Some ask, how could this be? God exists outside of space and time, seeing the past, present, and future all at once. In view of the plan of redemption, He had applied its benefits to His Mother Mary, even before His birth.

The Blessed Virgin Mary under this title is the Principal Patroness of the Philippine Islands. During the Spanish period, she was proclaimed as such by the Pope, at the request of the King of Spain. From this year, this feast is now a public holiday in the Philippines.

Let us pray. O God, Who by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin, prepared a worthy dwelling for Your Son, and Who, by Your Son’s death, foreseen by You, preserved her from all taint, grant, we beseech You, through her intercession, that we too may come to You unstained by sin.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
