40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EDSA PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION

Forty years ago, the country’s democracy was fought for and won by the Filipino people during the first People Power Revolution. The UST Pax Romana - Education Unit joins our fellow countrymen in commemorating this historic event as we continue to demand accountability from our public officials.

On February 25, 1986, the four-day protest against tyranny and dictatorship concluded. Around two million Filipinos marched the streets of Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) to let their cries against the brutal dictatorship be heard. This strength in numbers proved that, in a democratic nation, the power lies with the people. EDSA I reminds us that in the face of tyranny, unity among the Filipino people will revive our democracy.

May the celebration of the EDSA People Power Revolution be not just a memory of the past, but a call for us Thomasians to fight the ongoing battle against those in power who still continue to oppress the Filipino people. This part of our history serves as a reminder that we have a responsibility to uphold transparency and keep our public officials accountable.

"Open your mouth for the mute,
For the rights of all the unfortunate.
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy."

Proverbs 31:8-9

FEBRUARY 11
Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years later, on February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.”

Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: “O Mary conceived without sin.”

During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was “something white in the shape of a girl.” She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning “this thing.” It was “a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm.” Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. Bernadette was also impressed by the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity.

Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907.

FEBRUARY 3
Memorial of Blessed Dom Iustus Takayama Ukon

Blessed Dom Iustus Takayama was born in Takayama village, in Toyono-cho, Toyono-gun, Osaka Prefecture, the Martyr of Christ, Justus Ukon Takayama (1552-1615), a Catholic layman of heroic virtue who was considered a pillar of the early Church of Japan, died in Intramuros, Manila on February 3, 1615 – only 44 days after he was exiled to Manila for refusing to abjure his Catholic faith. In 1630, a petition was presented to the Vatican by the Archdiocese of Manila for Takayama’s beatification. His Cause was revived at the Vatican in 1963 – with the Japanese Bishops in charge. The Takayama process was crowned with Beatification in Osaka on February 7, 2017.

You may visit and pray before the statue of Blessed Takayama at the entrance of the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC), UST Graduate School.

PRAYER

God, in Your Wonderful Providence, You have chosen Justus Ukon Takayama to be a singular promoter of Your Kingdom, and an undaunted witness to the Catholic Faith -- Reward, we beseech you, his zeal for Your Glory, and graciously grant us what we humbly ask through his intervention.

(mention your petition)

Grant us also that, following his example, we may bravely bear all trials for the sake of our holy Catholic Faith. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

FEBRUARY 2
Feast of Nuestra Señora de la Purificacion y Candelaria and
the Presentation of the Lord

PRAYER

Ever Glorious and Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Universe and Mother of Mercy, chosen by the Father to be the Mother of His Son Jesus Christ, I cast myself into your arms confident of finding in your most loving heart peace and fulfillment.

O treasure of Divine Grace and refuge of sinners, be my guide and inspiration in this valley of tears. O fragrant Lily of Holiness, captivate my heart and have pity on my urgent request (mention the favor you need). I ask this favor through that love and humility which you showed at the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the temple.

O Lady of Candelaria, I thank the Lord for having given you to me an unworthy person to be my own mother who is worthy of all my love. Be always my intercessor before Jesus for all the graces necessary in my life, besides my personal necessities I also pray for the members of this parish, our Church leaders, and especially our priests.

In our quest for peace and reconciliation please give us the light to brighten our path in this world and lead us further to everlasting joy in heaven. Amen.

Our Lady of Candelaria, pray for us.
