Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Echague

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO

What stands now in Echague is a chapel made of concrete walls and thick wooden door. More than 200 years ago, the same chapel was made of nipa and bamboo. Despite its lowly structure, it was frequented by faithful devotees of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. A picture of the Virgin hangs on the center of the altar. it is actually an oil painting in a frame of 40 centimeters wide by 50 centimeters high. It show both the Virgin and Child robed in white silk. Our Lady is draped in a blue mantle with gold embroidery. The frame is made of silver. On April 16, 1854, a fire razed the neighborhood except the old chapel and the picture of the Virgin was spared from burning. The faithful considered the event miraculous so that in the following years, the picture was brought to the houses of the sick and he dying. Her feast day occurs on April 16 to commemorate its deliverance from fire. On September 12, 1854 Archbishop Francisco G. Ortiz approved the advocation of the locality of San Miguel to Nuestra Señora del Rosario for devotion and sanctification of the parishioners.
