Spirit Unbound

Poured out. What image or feeling does that phrase evoke for you? Does it remind you of seasons of overwhelming exhaustion from pouring out of an empty cup of energy? Does it call to mind the abundance of water poured out at the baptismal font as a baby is presented for initiation into the family of God? Do you recall evenings with family and friends around a table, sipping on never-ending glasses of tea or mugs of coffee as stories and memories flow from person to person? Do you remember moments when you worked with others to serve your neighborhood, receiving as much as you poured out in service with others?

God pours out differently than we do. God is infinite; we are finite. God operates in abundance; we struggle with a fear of scarcity. God’s love is unlimited; too often, our love is limited by our biases and preconceived notions about who does and doesn’t belong.

Pentecost is both a celebration and an invitation. We celebrate and remember God’s mighty and continuing act of sending the Holy Spirit to dwell among us, to guide us and nurture us on the journey of faith. We also receive and remember the invitation to follow the Spirit, to cooperate with God’s work in the world. Just as God pours out abundantly, God invites us continually. The unbounded Spirit is here among us, always working for the flourishing of God’s creation and always inviting us to participate. Will we join in?

As church workers move to a new assignment, one of the most important acts of love is proper turnover: files, supplies, equipment, and ministry resources that will continue the work after us.

Good stewardship is part of faithful ministry. When we leave things in order, we honor both the church and the God who called us.

To every church worker in transition—may you leave things well, so others can build well. 🙏✨

Every gift we carry is entrusted by God for a greater purpose.

Not for recognition, not for comparison, but for His glory and the building of His kingdom here on earth. When we use our gifts with the right heart, they become instruments of God’s love, reaching people and fulfilling His plans in ways we may not even see.

Today, offer your gifts back to God. Let Him use what He has given you—for His glory, not yours.

In the Power of the Spirit

Devout Jews who had traveled to Jerusalem from other nations to celebrate Pentecost miraculously heard the gospel being proclaimed in their respective tongues. Utterly amazed and bewildered, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"

What it meant was that these listeners were hearing the wonders of God through Jesus being declared for the first time. And in hearing this good news, they had the opportunity to call on the name of the Lord and be saved (v. 21).

For the disciples, it meant that they were graduated to apostleship ("sent ones") and were now qualified to speak authoritatively on behalf of Jesus Christ. To fulfill this new ministry, they were given the Spirit, who empowered them with the courage to speak God's truths.

What does it mean for us today? As ambassadors of Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 5:20), we too are empowered to share about God's great grace. Through the infilling of the Spirit, we can boldly proclaim the good news. To do so, however, requires daily connection and humility with God. We must pay attention to God's work in our lives and trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to be powerful, effective witnesses for our great God.

Jesus prays that we (that’s you and I and everyone else) would be one as “we are one.” We are to be as close as Jesus and God.

We are called to function as parts of the Trinity, aspects of the same thing, different, but one in essence and in hope. That is what community really means. It doesn’t mean individuality is lost; differences make the whole what it is.

But it does mean that we acknowledge our need for the other and acknowledge that we are somehow incomplete without the other.

How can we fight amongst ourselves? How can we hate and cast stones at one another when we are part of the same whole? We are hating and casting stones at ourselves. The church is many things, but in this prayer, it is clear that the church is called to be one.

We live in a world that constantly tells us who we should be—what to look like, what to achieve, how to measure our worth. But when we pause and remember who God is—holy, loving, just, and faithful—we are gently reminded of who we are meant to be.

When we forget God, we often lose sight of ourselves. But when we remember Him, our identity becomes clear again.

Today, return to that truth. You carry God’s image. Live it out with courage and grace.

Rainy days are part of life—but so is God’s protection.

As we prepare our homes and families, we also prepare our hearts—trusting that God is with us through every storm.

Let’s be wise, ready, and compassionate. Preparation is not fear—it is stewardship.

Chaos vs Control

The disciples got surprised again. After the shock of the Crucifixion and the delight of the Resurrection, Jesus literally floats off into the sky. I know it is easy to think of the disciples as dolts that never could figure out what was happening, but in their defense they were pretty consistently living in unprecedented times. Their savior and friend died, was buried, and rose again.

Even with his multiple warnings, why wouldn't the disciples continue to think that Jesus was going to be with them forever? And then one day, p**f, he is in the sky and gone. They are aghast, agog. What in the world do they do now?

Literally, what in this world are they supposed to do when Jesus isn't here anymore? The angels couldn't be more clear: Friends, he will come back how he left. So in the meantime, it is time to get back to work.
