Today, we recognize St. Joseph Calasanz
A Patron saint of Christian popular schools, Catholic schools (especially those for poor children), colleges, and schoolchildren. He founded the Piarists (the Order of the Pious Schools)

Born in Aragon, Spain, he studied law and theology before being ordained a priest in 1583. He moved to Rome in 1592 and was deeply moved by the neglect and lack of schooling for impoverished children. In 1597, he opened the modern era's first free public school system, known as the "Pious Schools," summarized by his motto "Piety and Letters" (faith and culture). He established the Piarists (Order of Poor Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools), adding a fourth vow to care for and educate youth.

St. Joseph Calasanz, pray for us.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Bartholomew
A Patron saint of trades and professions related to leatherworking and cutting.

Bartholomew was one of the twelve disciples who followed Jesus after the Baptism in the Jordan River. His name is included in the Synoptic Gospels as one of the Apostles linked to his contemporary Philip. We know little about this Apostle, whose Feast Day is celebrated on 24 August, the day Catholic tradition dates as his martyrdom. He was originally from Cana in Galilee, near Nazareth. Jesus said of him: โ€œBehold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guileโ€ (Jn 1:47). In his Gospel, John speaks of Nathanael, who is Bartholomew, at least according to the exegetes.

The Acts of the Apostles also mention Bartholomew among the disciples who gathered together in Jerusalem with Mary, Mother of God: โ€œThen they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath dayโ€™s journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. According to tradition, he travelled extensively on mission, preaching the Good News to people in distant places: Cappadocia, Upper India, various areas of the Middle East and Armenia. However, there is no certainty about his precise itinerary.

St. Bartholomew was tortured by being flayed alive (skinned) and subsequently beheaded. He is depicted in iconography with a knife in one hand and a book in the other and sometimes with his skin over his arm, like a cloak.

St. Bartholomew, pray for us.

Today we celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary the Blessed Mother of Jesus!

Established in 1954 by Pope Pius XII in his encyclical Ad caeli reginam, it honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth due to her unique role in Christian redemption as the Mother of Jesus Christ. Mary's royal status flows directly from Jesus being the King of Kings; in the ancient Davidic kingdom, the mother of the king held the influential title of Queen Mother (Gebirah). Gabriel foretells her son's eternal throne) and Revelation 12 ("a woman clothed with the sun") point to her royal and maternal stature. Her queenship recognizes her total cooperation in Christ's saving mission, from the Incarnation to her bodily Assumption into heaven.

Queen of Heaven, intercede for us.
