Blessed Jordan, under pressure from Pope Gregory IX, transferred the body of our holy Father Dominic from where he had asked to be buried โ€œat the feet of the brethrenโ€, that is, in the floor of the choir, to a noble shrine in a side chapel.

More than 300 friars were present to celebrate this important day. In one of his letters, Bl. Jordan of Saxony, describes the event:

โ€œBut then the wonderful day came for the translation of the relics of one who was an illustrious doctor in his lifetime. Present were the venerable Archbishop of Ravenna, surrounded by bishops and a large number of prelates, as well as by a vast multitude of people of different languages who gave remarkable witness to their devotion. Present also was the Bolognese militia, which would not let this holy body, that they considered to be in their safekeeping, be snatched from them. As for the brethren, they were anxious: although they had nothing to fear, they were seized with misgivings lest the body of Saint Dominic, which had lain in a mean tomb exposed to water and heat for such a long period of time, should be found eaten with worms and giving off a foul odor in the same way that might be expected with other corpses, thus destroying the devotion of the people for so great a man. Nonetheless the bishops approached devoutly. The stone that was firmly cemented to the sepulcher was removed with instruments of iron. Within the tomb was a wooden coffin, just as it had been placed there by the venerable Pope Gregory when he was bishop of Ostia. The body had been buried there, and a small hole remained in the top of the coffin.

The upper part of the coffin was moved a little bit. As soon as the stone was taken away, the body gave forth a wonderful odor through the opening; its sweetness astonished those present, and they were filled with wonder at this strange occurrence. Everyone shed tears of joy, and fear and hope rose in all hearts. We ourselves also smelled the sweetness of this perfume, and we bear witness to what we have seen and smelt. Eager with love, we remained devotedly near the body of Dominic for a long time, and we were unable to sate ourselves with this great sweetness. If one touched the body with a hand or a belt or some other object, the odor immediately attached itself to it for a long period of time.

The body was carried to the marble sepulcher where it would restโ€”it and the perfume that it poured forth. This marvelous aroma which the holy body emitted was evidence to all how much the saint had truly been the good odor of Christโ€.

Blessed Cormier, the seventy-sixth Master General of the Dominican Order, was born in Orleans on December 18, 1832. He entered the Seminary of Orleans and was ordained on May 17, 1856 by Bishop Dupanloup. He chose the Dominican Order following the example of Blessed Agnes de Lagneac, O.P. to whom he attributed his vocation. His charity was universal. It was said of him; โ€œhe gives peace to everything he touches.โ€ In the Order or outside it, he was a man of God, son of Dominic, and an artisan of peace. He was also a faithful interpreter of the mind and directives of the Church during the difficult time of โ€œModernismโ€. At the end of his mandate as Master General, he retired to Saint Clement in Rome where he died a few months later on December 17, 1916.

He was beatified on 20 November 1994 by Pope John Paul II.

Let us pray:
May God the Father bless us.
May God the Son heal us.
May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us.
Give us eyes to see with,
Ears to hear with,
Hands to do Godโ€™s work with,
Feet to walk with,
And mouth to preach the Word of salvation with
And may the angel of peace watch over us.
May He lead us at last by the Lordโ€™s gift to the kingdom. Amen.

Blessed Columba was born in Rieti, Italy in 1467. She was clothed with the habit of the Sisters of Penance at Rieti. Following in the footsteps of Saint Catherine of Siena, she showed an admirable charity towards the poor, the sick and the dying. In Perugia she
founded a convent of sisters where she made profession and became prioress in 1490. There she was noted for her work of reconciliation for which she received the name โ€œDove of Peace.โ€ She died there on the feast of the Ascension, May 20, 1501.

Let us pray:

May God the Father bless us.

Blessed Francis Coll was born at Gombreny in the Catalan Pyrenees in 1812 and, after studying at the diocesan seminary at Vich, entered the Order at the priory of Gerona in 1830. In 1835 the anticlerical government closed the house of studies at Gerona and dispersed the Dominican students. From that day until his death he maintained a heroic fidelity to his Dominican vocation without the support offered by Dominican community life. Eventually he was ordained at the diocesan seminary at Vich in 1836. After several years of parish ministry he pursued itinerant preaching along with his friend Saint Anthony Claret. He founded the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation to teach the children of the poor in the villages where he preached. In December, 1869, Blessed Francis suffered a stroke which left him completely blind. He died at Vich on April 2, 1875.

Saint Francisco was beatified by the great Pope John Paul II on 29 April 1979. He was canonized yesterday by Pope Benedict XVI.

Let us pray:

God of all truth, you chose Saint Francis to make known the name of your Son and to instruct Christian people in holiness. By the help of his prayers may the true faith be continually sustained and grow through the ministry of preaching. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessed Andrew, born in 1375 at Saint-Maximin in France, entered the Dominican Order at the priory of Saint Mary Magdalene, where he distinguished himself through his teaching, preaching across Provence, and zealous efforts to restore regular observance within the Order. Alongside his apostolic work, he also expressed his devotion through art, contributing to many Dominican churches in southern France. Known for his humility and service to his brethren, he spent his life faithfully advancing the Dominican mission; while some accounts note his death at Santarรฉm, he is more commonly recorded to have died at Aix-en-Provence on May 15, 1450. His holiness was later recognized by the Church, and he was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV on May 9, 1748.

Blessed Imelda, a member of the noble Lambertini family, was born at Bologna about 1321. At the age of nine she was placed in the Dominican monastery at Val di Pietra, near Bologna. Her status there is uncertain, although she wore the habit of the nuns. She had a special devotion to the eucharistic presence of our Lord, but because of her age was not allowed to actually receive communion. She was consumed with so great a longing to be united with Jesus in the Eucharist that she merited to communicate miraculously. She died on the feast of the Ascension, May 13, 1333. Pope Pius X named her patron of first communicants.

Let us Pray:

Lord Jesus Christ, You received into Heaven Blessed Imelda who loved You in the Eucharistic Banquet. By her prayers may we learn to approach Your holy table with that same fervent love and so fulfill our longing to be with You, who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen

Blessed Jane, the only daughter of Alphonso V of Portugal, was born in Lisbon in 1452. For a time she served as regent of Portugal during her fatherโ€™s absence, but had little taste for the life of the royal court. She desired to embrace religious life and despite the violent opposition of her brother and father, she entered the Dominican monastery of Aveiro in 1472. Dedicated to prayer and penance she lived for the conversion of sinners and the liberation of the Christian captives in Africa. She lived a life of humility and simplicity and died at the monastery on May 12, 1490 surrounded by her Dominican community.

Blessed Jane was beatified on 31 December 1692 by Pope Innocent XII.

Let us Pray:

O God, in the midst of the royal court you strengthened Blessed Jane with purity of heart. By her prayers may your faithful turn from the things of earth and seek after the things of heaven. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Antonino Fierozzi was born in Florence in 1389 and in 1405 was received into the Order โ€œfor the future priory of Fiesoleโ€ by Blessed John Dominic, who at that time was reforming the Dominican priories of the area according to the wishes of Blessed Raymond of Capua. He served the friars in various priories in Italy, often as local superior, and became a distinguished master of canon law. In 1436 he founded the famous priory of San Marco in Florence and under his leadership Fra Angelico decorated the priory and an outstanding library was collected. His wisdom and pastoral zeal made him a natural choice for Archbishop of Florence in 1446. He was noted for his service to the poor and established a society under the patronage of Saint Martin of Tours to assist him in this work. Among his writings the best known is his Summa Moralis. His whole life was mirrored in his last words, โ€œto serve God is to reign.โ€ He died on May 2,1459. His funeral Mass was celebrated by Pope Pius II. He was canonized on Trinity Sunday, May 31, 1523.

Let us pray:
Eternal God, you blessed Saint Antoninus with a marvelous gift of counsel. By the help of his prayers, while we walk in the darkness of this life, may we learn from the light of Christ all that we ought to do. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Virgin Mother Mary, with trust we approach you. We, your preachers, fly to you who believed in the words sent from heaven and pondered them in your heart. We stand close around you, who are always present to the gathering of apostles.

In you the Word was made flesh, that same Word which we receive, contemplate, praise together and preach. Therefore, under your guidance we today devote ourselves anew to the ministry of the Word. Furthermore, we declare to you that, hearing with you the Word within ourselves and anointed by the Spirit, whose sacred vessel you pre-eminently are, we are consecrated in the name of Jesus Christ to the evangelization of the world.

With the eyes of your heart enlightened, you understood the mystery of the Word. Through you we, too, are able to perceive the presence of that same Word in the history of our time, so that we may finally contemplate him face to face.

Through you the Father sent his Son into the world that he might save it. Through you we will be powerful in the sight of your people, becoming witnesses of that truth which frees and of that love which unites.

To this place we have brought our needs and here we ponder them. Do you, Mother, give us strength and preserve the harmony of our family, so that what was begun by our profession may be brought to completion by our love for one another, for the salvation of the world and to the praise and glory of God.

Amen

Blessed Albert was born in Valle dโ€™Ogna near Bergamo in 1214. As a married man he was known for his generosity to the poor, a virtue for which his wife reproached him. Upon the death of his wife, being childless, he left his fatherโ€™s farm and went to Cremona where he lived in poverty. His poverty was a witness to a group of heretics there who
boasted of their own poverty. Attracted by the life of Saint Dominic he joined the Brothers of Penance, which later became the Order of Penance of Saint Dominic, and lived at the Dominican priory. He died on May 7, 1279.

Let us pray:

Almighty and ever-loving God, you led Blessed Albert to shine forth in humility of life, in zeal for the truth and in apostolic charity. May we follow in his footsteps and so obtain the same reward. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
