Saint Paul VI’s greatest accomplishment was the completion and implementation of Vatican II. It was a monumental task that he completed with grace and integrity. Its decisions about liturgy were the first ones noticed by most Catholics, but its other documents—especially the ones about ecumenism, interfaith relations, divine revelation, religious liberty, the Church’s self-understanding and the Church’s work with the entire human family—have become the Catholic Church’s road map since 1965.

In 1958, Montini was the first of 23 cardinals named by Pope John XXIII, two months after the latter’s election as pope. Cardinal Montini helped in preparing Vatican II and participated enthusiastically in its first sessions. When he was elected pope in June 1963, he immediately decided to continue that Council, which had another three sessions before its conclusion on December 8, 1965. The day before Vatican II concluded, Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras revoked the excommunications that their predecessors had made in 1054. The pope worked very hard to ensure that bishops would approve the Council’s 16 documents by overwhelming majorities.

Saint Paul VI had stunned the world by visiting the Holy Land in January 1964, and meeting Athenagoras, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in person. The pope made eight more international trips, including one in 1965, to visit New York City and speak on behalf of peace before the United Nations General Assembly. He also visited India (1964), Colombia (1968), Uganda (1969), and seven Asian countries during a 10-day tour in 1970.

Also in 1965, he instituted the World Synod of Bishops, and the next year decreed that bishops must offer their resignations on reaching age 75. In 1970, he decided that cardinals over 80 would no longer vote in papal conclaves or head the Holy See’s major offices. He had increased the number of cardinals significantly, giving many countries their first cardinal. Eventually establishing diplomatic relations between the Holy See and 40 countries, he also instituted a permanent observer mission at the United Nations in 1964. Paul VI wrote seven encyclicals; his last one in 1968 on human life—Humanae Vitae—prohibited artificial birth control.

Saint Paul VI died at Castel Gandolfo on August 6, 1978, and was buried in St. Peter’s Basilica. He was beatified on October 19, 2014, and canonized on October 14, 2018. Since 2019 his liturgical feast has been celebrated on May 29.

𝗟𝗘𝗧 𝗨𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬 | Heavenly Father, we thank You for raising Your Servant, St. Paul VI,
to be numbered among the Saints. May his example of faith, courage and patient endurance inspire us in our daily living of the Gospel and in our witness to Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today, the Church honors Jesus Christ as the Eternal High Priest. Unlike the priests of the Old Covenant who offered sacrifices repeatedly, Jesus offered Himself once and for all, as both Priest and Victim, for the redemption of the world. His priesthood is not bound by time but continues eternally, as He intercedes for humanity before the Father. Christ remains present in the Church through the sacraments, constantly dispensing grace, forgiving sins, and granting new life. Pope Pius XII in Mediator Dei emphasized that in every Mass, Jesus Himself is the one offering the sacrifice, standing eternally before God on behalf of His people.

The institution of the ministerial priesthood, rooted in Christ’s own priesthood, allows His redemptive sacrifice to be made present throughout time. During the Last Supper, Christ instituted both the Eucharist and the ministerial priesthood, entrusting His Apostles and their successors with the mission of continuing His saving work. The ordained priest, acting in persona Christi (in the person of Christ), offers the sacrifice of the Mass, forgives sins in confession, and shepherds the faithful, all through the authority given by Christ Himself. Apostolic succession ensures that this priestly ministry remains valid and unbroken from the time of the Apostles to the present day.

Yet, the priesthood of Christ is not limited only to the ordained. Through baptism, all believers share in Christ’s priesthood, called to offer spiritual sacrifices through prayer, charity, and daily acts of love. Through it, the faithful, "tug on the invisible anchor" of Christ's eternal priesthood, participates in His ongoing work of redemption through their union with Him in the sacraments and in their personal lives. The feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest, observed after Pentecost, invites all Christians to renew their awareness of Christ’s unceasing priestly intercession and to deepen their participation in His mission of love and salvation.

𝗟𝗘𝗧 𝗨𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬 | Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest, You offered Yourself as the perfect sacrifice for our salvation. Grant that we may unite our lives with Your offering and become faithful instruments of Your grace. Amen.

When Philip Neri arrived in Rome in 1534, it was as if a light were lit in the darkness of misery that nestled amidst the glories of the Ara Pacis and the lustrous travertines of the noble palaces. The center of the city had the dirty face of the outskirts, and Philip would go and get a small room, in San Girolamo in via Giulia. By day, even before he was ordained a priest, his kind face and happy heart led those who met him to the warmth of God, to which warmth he added some bread when he was able - or a caress on the forehead, a whispered comfort, to those who complain about the pallets of the Hospital of the Incurables. At night, a soul of fire, Philip, lost in a dialogue so intimate with God that he could make his bed on the steps of a church or even atop the stone of a catacomb.

This, recalls Pope Francis in his Message marking the 500th anniversary of St. Philip Neri’s birth, made him a “passionate proclaimer of the Word of God”. This was the secret that made him a “chiseler of souls”. “His spiritual fatherhood,” Francis observes, “His spiritual fatherhood shone through all of his work, characterized by trust in people, by spurning dark and dreary colours, by a festive spirit and joy, by the conviction that grace does not quell nature but heals it, strengthens it and perfects it.” Quoting St. Philip’s biographer, Pope Francis goes on in that Message to say, “He approached in a simple fashion, now this one, then that one, and everyone quickly became his friend." Pope Francis adds, “He loved spontaneity, avoided artifice, chose the most entertaining ways to educate in Christian virtue. At the same time he proposed a healthy discipline which entailed the exercise of willingness to receive Christ concretely into one’s life.”

Many of those, who thus came to know Philip, wanted to do ashe did. Thus, did the “Oratory” come into being, among the fetid hovels perfumed day by day by a charity made of flesh and - not a project drawn on paper and dropped from above as a cold almsgiving. “Thanks also to the apostolate of St Philip,” writes again Pope Francis, “the commitment to the salvation of souls returned to be a priority in the Church’s action; it was again understood that Pastors must be with the people in order to guide them and support them in the faith.” Philip himself became a pastor, after ordination to the the priesthood in 1551, though he never changed his lifestyle. With time, a first community took shape around him, the cell of the future Congregation of the Oratory that in 1575 received the blessing of Pope Gregory XIII.

“My sons, be humble, be lowly: be humble, be lowly,” Fr. Philip would say again and again, reminding his charges that, to be children of God, “It is not enough to honor superiors, but we must honor our equals and the inferiors, and try to be the first to give honor.” Also striking, especially from a soul as contemplative as Mary at the feet of Jesus, the spirit of Martha living in his heart, which we see when he says, “It is better to obey the sacristan and the porter when they call, than to remain in one’s room at prayer.” Philip Neri, the third Apostle of Rome, closed his eyes in the early hours of May 26, 1595. The dynamism of his love has never gone out.
