Make ourselves a living sacrifice holy and pleasing to God.

In today’s gospel (Mat. 16:21-27) Jesus rebukes Peter for thinking not in accordance with God’s mind and will. Then Jesus redirects Peter to what the mind of God is; to deny oneself, take up the cross, and follow Him.

What does taking up the cross and following Jesus mean?
2nd Reading will give us a better picture. Paul to the Romans urges the people to make oneself as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Sacrifice is meant to do two things in the Bible, (1) to make holy and (2) to reconcile to God. Thus, making ourselves holy, a place of sacrifice and reconciliation between humans and God, is to align ourselves to God’s mind and will. In everything we do, we do it to glorify God.

In the end, denying everything only leads us to everything. For when we deny ourselves and the things around us, what is left in our lives is God alone. And with God in our lives, we have everything we need.

What are the things we do that we still think first of ourselves rather than the goodness of others?
What part of ourselves do we still need to deny to fully do the will of God?

Do we recognize the Giver of our skills and talents?

Sometimes, without realizing it, we brag about what we have—money, status, talents, and skills. We sometimes boast of who we are, our achievements, and even show off our intellectual capacity.

In today’s gospel (Mat. 16:13-20) Peter seems to hit the jackpot by answering correctly Jesus, question of who He is for them. But Jesus immediately reminded Peter and the other apostles that it was not through Peter’s effort, but solely a grace from God. “Flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but my heavenly Father.”

This reminds us that recognition brings good feelings; it makes us happy. But let us not forget that all that we have is for God.

In the last contemplation of the Ignatian Spirituality, St Ignatius leads us to contemplate the love of God. In the end, we come to realize that everything in us including our existence is a gift from God and is to be offered back to God for His greater Glory. St. Ignatius will then invite us to pray the suscipe.

Take, Lord, receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding, and my entire will.
Whatever I have or possess, You have given me;
I give it all back to You, Lord.
Everything is Yours; give me only Your love and Your grace,
and I am rich enough.
I ask for nothing more. Amen.

Maligayang Kapistahan San Roque!

Nawa’y maging masaya at makabuluhan ang ating pagdiriwang, puno ng pananampalataya, pagkakaisa, at pasasalamat.

Panginoon, patuloy Mo po kaming gabayan, pagpalain, at protektahan, lalo na ang aming mga pamilya at komunidad. Sa pamamagitan ng panalangin ni San Roque, ilayo Mo po kami sa karamdaman at panganib at bigyan kami ng matatag na pananampalataya sa pangalan ng iyong anak na si Hesus Amen.

San roque ipanalangin mo kami!

20th Sunday in ordinary time

“Can you still trust God when He seems silent?”

Matthew 15:21–28

In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of a Canaanite woman who came to Jesus and asked Him to heal her daughter. Even when Jesus did not answer her right away, she did not stop asking. She remained humble and held on to her faith. Because of her great faith, Jesus granted what she had asked for.

There are times when we also pray for something and wonder why God seems silent. We may feel tired, lose hope, or question if He is really listening. But this Gospel reminds us that just because we do not see an answer right away does not mean God is not listening.

Sometimes, faith means waiting, praying, and trusting even when we do not understand. May we never give up on God, especially in the moments when we need Him the most.

19th Sunday in ordinary time

In toda'y Gospel ( Matthew 14:22-33), After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side,while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.

Jesus sends His disciples ahead in a boat while He goes to pray alone. During the night, strong winds trouble the sea, and the disciples struggle. Jesus comes toward them walking on the water, but they are afraid, thinking He is a ghost. Jesus reassures them not to be afraid. Peter asks to come to Jesus on the water, and he begins to walk toward Him. However, when Peter becomes afraid of the wind, he starts to sink and calls out for help. Jesus saves him and reminds him to have faith. When they enter the boat, the wind stops, and the disciples worship Jesus as the Son of God.

The Gospel teaches us about faith and trust in Jesus. Like Peter, we can overcome challenges when we keep our focus on Him. But when fear and doubt take over, we lose confidence and begin to struggle. This story reminds us that Jesus is always there to guide and save us whenever we call on Him.

This Gospel reminds me to stay strong in my faith, especially during difficult times. Life can feel like a storm, but as long as I keep my trust in Jesus, I will not be overwhelmed. Even when I fail or feel afraid, I know that Jesus will always reach out to lift me up.

18th Sunday in ordinary time

In today's Gospel (Matthew 14:13-21), Jesus reminds us that God's love and providence are never limited by what we have. Faced with a hungry crowd, the disciples only saw loaves and fish - too little to feed thousands. But Jesus saw an opportunity to reveal the power of faith, compassion, and complete trust in the Father.

How often do we feel that what we have is not enough? We may think our strength is too weak, our faith too small, or our efforts too insignificant. Yet Jesus asks us to bring everything to him. When we place our lives, our gifts, our struggles, and our hopes into his hands, he transforms our little into an overflowing blessing.

The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves is not only about feeding physical hunger. It is a reminder that Christ alone satisfies the deepest hunger of our hearts. He continues to nourish us through his Word, his love, and the holy eucharist, inviting us to become instruments of his generosity by sharing what we have with those in need.

Today, let us trust in God's abundant providence. May we never be afraid to offer our "loaves and fish," knowing that nothing given to Jesus is ever wasted. With Him, there is always enough - and even more than enough.
