FEBRUARY 18 | ASH WEDNESDAY
Beginning of Lenten Season

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten Season in the Church’s calendar and is observed as a day of prayer, fasting, and repentance. The Lenten Season, which lasts forty days, commemorates the time Jesus Christ spent fasting and praying in the desert, as narrated in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 4:1–11). During this period, we are invited to imitate Christ’s sacrifice through prayer, self-discipline, fasting, and almsgiving, preparing their hearts for the celebration of Easter and deepening their relationship with God.

On this day, ashes—usually made from burned palms of the previous year’s Palm Sunday—are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross, accompanied by the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” This day reminds us of our mortality and calls us to conversion and spiritual renewal by inviting us to reflect on our lives, turn away from sin, and recommit ourselves to faith, prayer, and acts of charity.

FEBRUARY 11 | MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES
Patroness of the Sick
World Day of the Sick

The Apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes happened in 1858 in Lourdes, France, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to a young girl named Saint Bernadette Soubirous. She appeared as a beautiful lady in white and asked Bernadette to pray the Rosary, do penance, and pray for sinners. During the apparitions, Mary asked Bernadette to dig in the ground, where a spring of water flowed and later became known for many miraculous healings. On March 25, she revealed herself as “the Immaculate Conception.”
These apparitions were approved by the Catholic Church in 1862, and Lourdes has since become one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

O ever-Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy,
health of the sick, refuge of sinners,
comforter of the afflicted,
you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings;
look with mercy on me.
By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes,
you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary,
whence you dispense your favours;
and already many sufferers have obtained
the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.
I come, therefore, with complete confidence
to implore your maternal intercession.
Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests.
(mention your petition)
Through gratitude for your favours,
I will endeavour to imitate your virtues,
that I may one day share your glory,
and bless you in eternity. Amen.

FEBRUARY 2 | FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

The Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2, recalling when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem to present Him to God in obedience to the Law of Moses and to fulfill the requirements of Jewish ritual purification and consecration of the firstborn son. At the Temple, the devout Simeon and the prophetess Anna recognized Jesus as the long‑awaited Savior and proclaimed Him as a light for all nations, a theme reflected in the blessing and procession of candles associated with this feast, which is also known as Candlemas. This celebration not only honors Christ as the Light of the World but also invites the faithful to reflect on the mystery of God meeting humanity and to renew their own commitment to welcome Christ into their hearts and lives with humility and faith, just as Simeon and Anna did.

JANUARY 11 | FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

The Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord, which marks the end of the Christmas season and commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Although Jesus was sinless and had no need for repentance, He chose to be baptized in order to fully identify with humanity and to sanctify the waters of baptism. At this moment, the heavens were opened, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove, and the voice of the Father was heard saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” This event is a powerful revelation of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry.
The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our own baptism and our identity as beloved children of God.

JANUARY 4 | SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. The Solemnity of the Epiphany is celebrated either on January 6 or, according to the decision of the episcopal conference, on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8. This feast celebrates the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the world as Savior of all nations. This feast highlights the visit of the Magi, wise men from the East, who followed a star to Bethlehem and offered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn King. Their journey signifies that salvation in Christ is not only for Israel but for all peoples, Jews and Gentiles alike.

Guided by faith and light, the Magi teach us to seek Christ sincerely, to recognize Him even in humility, and to offer Him the best of ourselves. This solemnity invites us to be like the star—bearing Christ’s light to others—so that through our lives, Jesus may be made known to the whole world.

JANUARY 1 | SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, celebrated every January 1, honors the Blessed Virgin Mary’s unique role in God’s plan of salvation as the mother of Jesus Christ, true God and true man. This feast proclaims the central truth of our faith that Jesus is fully divine, and therefore Mary is rightly called Theotokos (God-bearer).

By honoring Mary, the Church points us to her Son, the Savior of the world, whom she brought forth. Celebrated at the beginning of the new year, this solemnity invites us to entrust our lives to God’s care through Mary’s maternal intercession, asking for peace and grace as we journey forward with Christ.

DECEMBER 28 | FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

The Feast of the Holy Family is a celebration honoring Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph as a family and presenting their life together in Nazareth as a model for all Christian families, emphasizing love, obedience to God, and daily faith lived at home. It is typically celebrated on the Sunday after Christmas (or on December 30 if there is no Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s Day), and was formally instituted in the early 20th century to encourage devotion and reflect on the sanctity of family life within the Church’s liturgical year. The Feast of the Holy Family reminds us that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph serve as the perfect model of family. Their simple yet faithful life draws inspiration for every family, teaching that holiness is lived through trust in God at the heart of the home.

DECEMBER 25 | SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD
Christmas Day

The Nativity of the Lord celebrates the great mystery of God’s love for humanity—the moment when the eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us. In the stillness of Bethlehem, the Son of God entered the world not in power or earthly glory, but in humility, born of the Virgin Mary and laid in a manger. This holy night reveals God’s saving plan, promised long before and fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

The birth of Christ is the fulfillment of the prophecy spoken by the Prophet Isaiah: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). This prophecy points to God’s promise that a Savior would come into the world through a virgin, a sign that this child would be born not by human power alone, but by God’s divine will. In Mary’s “yes,” the ancient promise was realized, and Emmanuel—God with us—was born.

Saint John proclaims, “And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). The eternal Word, who was with God from the beginning, chose to take on human nature. By becoming man, Jesus shared fully in our humanity, revealing a God who is close to His people, who walks with them in their joys and sorrows.

The simplicity of the Nativity carries a powerful message. Shepherds were the first to receive the good news, showing that God’s salvation is offered to all, especially the humble and the poor. In the child lying in a manger, we encounter the light that shines in the darkness, bringing hope, peace, and redemption to the world.

As we celebrate the Nativity of the Lord, we are invited to welcome Christ anew into our hearts. The Word made flesh calls us to live in love and to become witnesses of God’s mercy. In the child of Bethlehem, we see the greatest gift ever given: God Himself, born for our salvation.

DECEMBER 12 | FEAST OF THE OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
Queen of Mexico and Patroness of the Philippines

Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. According to tradition, Our Lady Guadaple appeared to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531, revealing herself as the Mother of God and of all humanity. She asked that a shrine be built so she could show her love and compassion to all who believe. When Juan Diego brought this message to Bishop Zumárraga, he was asked for proof. The Virgin then instructed Juan to gather miraculous flowers from the hilltop—an act that confirmed her presence and mission. Her story, preserved in early Nahuatl writings, continues to inspire millions.

Currently, more than 20 million pilgrims visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe each year, standing on the very ground where she appeared. As we honor her feast, let us remember her message of hope and tender care for the poor and the humble. May Our Lady of Guadalupe remind us to trust in God’s plans, seek peace, and extend compassion to others in our daily lives.

On 1910 Pope St. Pius X declared her Patroness of Latin America, and on 1935 Pope Pius XI extended her patronage to the Philippines.

DECEMBER 08 | SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Principal Patroness of the Philippines

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the singular grace granted to the Virgin Mary, who, from the very first moment of her conception, was preserved free from the stain of original sin by the power of God in anticipation of her unique role as the Mother of Jesus Christ. This truth, solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX in Ineffabilis Deus (1854), affirms that Mary received the gift of salvation in Christ at her conception so that she could fully and freely accept God's plan. While this privilege is unique to Mary, the feast also reminds the faithful that every person is created by God with a purpose and is called to holiness, purity, and a generous response to His will. Mary’s humble “Let it be done to me according to Your word” becomes a model for all Christians, inviting them to embrace the mission God has prepared for them since before they were formed in the womb.

NOVEMBER 30 | 1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

“The Lord Himself will give you a sign: Emmanuel—God with us.” (Isaiah 7:14)

Today, we enter a new liturgical calendar, and with it, we begin the beautiful season of Advent—a time filled with hope, reflection, and joyful expectation. Advent invites us into a sacred journey of preparing our minds and hearts for the coming of Christ. It is a season of waiting, not with anxiety, but with deep faith and anticipation, as we remember His first coming in Bethlehem and look forward to His promised return.

Today, on the First Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of Hope. This first flame reminds us that even in times of uncertainty, God’s promises remain true. Advent calls us to pause, to prepare, and to open our hearts to the light that Christ brings into the world and into our lives. As we begin this sacred season, may we renew our faith and ready ourselves for the coming of our Savior.
