The Practice of Kissing the Stole

I keep this practice...I kiss the stole when I don it and when I take it off
- Because the priesthood is greater than my miserable self
- Because the stole reminds me that I have received a gift I do not deserve
- Because with the stole on, it is my sacred privilege to act and speak in the person of Christ
- Because on the day I was ordained and wore the priest's stole the first time, I made promises that I can keep only by God's grace
- Because I take upon myself the yoke Christ offers, in the realization that it is only when I am united to him that I can be fruitful and still find rest
- Because the stole is my bond with the people to whom God sends me as a priest; it is the badge of the service I owe them: with the stole on, I receive them into the Church through baptism, absolve their sins in Penance, offer them the Body and Blood of Christ, unite them in Holy Matrimony and comfort them with the Anointing of the Sick
- Because I pray that on the day I die, someone will hold the stole to my lips as I gasp for breath so that I can thank God for the gift of a lifetime in his service.
