This is the only medal in the whole world that was designed not by an artist nor by an angel or saint, but by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. On November 27, 1830, she showed to St. Catherine Laboure the design of the front and the reverse of the medal with the instruction:
“Have a medal made after this design. Abundant graces will be given to those who wear it with confidence and faith”.
