Easternknights is so back!

𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗚𝗢𝗗!

𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟

As the Church waits in prayerful anticipation for the election of a new pope, we also find ourselves reflecting deeply on the life and legacy of Pope Francis, our shepherd who never tired of reminding us that the Gospel is lived most truthfully when it is lived among the poor.

In Evangelii Gaudium, he writes: “Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society.” These words are more than just a call, they are a mission, a mirror held up to our Church and our hearts.

Pope Francis lived this mission. From choosing the name "Francis" after the saint of poverty and peace, to choosing simplicity over grandeur, he modeled a Church that listens to the cry of the poor, walks with them, and uplifts them with dignity. His papacy was a living homily, inviting us to be a Church of the peripheries, not a fortress of comfort.

This is what it means to receive a prophetic call, a summons from God to speak and live the truth, especially when the world refuses to listen. It is a call to challenge injustice, to comfort the afflicted, and to reveal God's love through action. A prophetic call isn’t reserved for saints and popes, it belongs to each of us, urging us to be bold in faith and compassionate in service.

Now, as we look to the future, may we never forget the gentle strength with which Pope Francis reminded us that true faith is inseparable from justice, and that the face of Christ is most clearly seen in the broken, the forgotten, and the poor.

Let us carry this torch forward, not in memory alone, but in action.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗣𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗗

Among the many symbols that defined the papacy of Pope Francis, one stands out in its simplicity and profound meaning, the Good Shepherd Cross. Unlike the traditional ornate papal pectoral crosses of his predecessors, Pope Francis chose a modest silver cross that depicts Christ as the Good Shepherd, carrying a lost sheep on His shoulders, with others following behind. It is a quiet cross, not adorned with gold or jewels, but radiant with mercy, compassion, and pastoral love.

This cross is more than an ornament, it is a living statement of who Pope Francis was as a shepherd to the people of God.

The image of the Good Shepherd is one of the most tender and powerful metaphors in Scripture. In John 10:11, Jesus says, “𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗽.” The Good Shepherd is not a distant ruler, but one who walks among the flock, who knows them by name, who searches for the lost, carries the wounded, and defends the weak. It is a cross that reminds us that true leadership in the Church is not about power or prestige, but service, sacrifice, and love.

Pope Francis lived this image daily.

He was a pope who embraced the poor, kissed the sick, and knelt before prisoners to wash their feet. He chose a life of simplicity, living in the Casa Santa Marta instead of the Apostolic Palace, riding in a modest car, and carrying his own bag. His words cut through indifference, and his actions embodied what he preached. Like the Good Shepherd, he was close to the people, especially those who were often forgotten: the poor, the immigrants, the elderly, the marginalized.

When he spoke about mercy, it wasn’t a theological concept, it was the very heart of his ministry. And when he said “the Church is a field hospital after battle,” he was pointing us to the same image we see on his cross: Christ seeking out the wounded and bringing them home.

In the end, the Good Shepherd Cross was not just worn on Pope Francis’ chest, it was etched into the very fabric of his papacy. It became the shape of his mission and the spirit of his leadership.

As we remember him and await the next successor of Peter, may we all look to that same cross, not just as a symbol, but as a way of life. May we too become shepherds in our own way, reaching out to the lost, lifting up the broken, and leading with the gentle strength of Christ.

Because in a world that often forgets the value of each soul, the Cross of the Good Shepherd reminds us: every person matters, and no one is ever too lost to be found.

This Lenten season, as we reflect on the life, suffering, and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are reminded of 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿. At the same time, the upcoming 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 in the Philippines call us to make serious choices about who we allow to lead our communities and nation.

𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲. He washed the feet of His disciples, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and forgave sinners. He led by example, putting others before Himself, even unto death.

As faithful Catholics, 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆. A gentle reminder that no matter how far we journey, how many wonders we see, or how many places we call home, this world is not our final stop.

We are all travelers, passing through, some exploring the vast beauty of creation, others simply moving from one day to the next. But in the end, our hearts long for something beyond what this world can offer.

Heaven is where we truly belong, where our restless souls find peace. This life is but a vehicle, carrying us closer to the divine, shaping us along the way. May we never lose sight of our true destination.

Looking at the Crucifix is more than just gazing upon a symbol. It is an invitation to see the depth of God's love. St. Anthony of Padua reminds us that in the Cross, we truly understand our worth. The world may measure our value by status, success, or appearance, but Christ on the Cross reveals a different truth, that God loves us so much that He gave Himself entirely for our salvation.

The Crucifix is a mirror, reflecting not only our brokenness and sin but also the infinite mercy and love of God. It shows us humility, sacrifice, and the true meaning of redemption. When we look closely, we see the wounds that heal us, the suffering that brings us peace, and the love that asks nothing in return yet gives everything.

As Catholics, we should never take the Crucifix for granted. It is not just an object of devotion but a profound revelation of who God is and who we are in His eyes. Beloved, redeemed, and called to love as He loves.
