Attention is one of the most valuable things we have, and we give it away constantly.
Think about what happens when you open your phone. You scroll through one post, then another. A headline catches your eye. A video starts playing. Someone says something you disagree with. You scroll again. There is always something else waiting, and eventually you can spend a surprising amount of time consuming things you never intended to see.
Now think about the Rosary.
Your thumb moves there, too. Bead by bead, prayer after prayer, you follow the same familiar rhythm. On the surface, the movements look almost identical. But what you're doing with your attention is very different.
Doomscrolling asks you to keep moving. The Rosary asks you to stay.
When you scroll, you're constantly being presented with something new. The next post takes the place of the last before you've had time to sit with it. The Rosary works in the opposite direction. Its repetition creates space to contemplate the Mysteries: the life of Christ, seen through the eyes of His Mother.
One habit trains us to consume whatever comes next. The other trains us to remain with something worth contemplating.
That distinction feels especially important now because our attention has become something other people compete for. Apps are designed to keep us looking. Notifications call us back. Feeds never really end. Even boredom has become something we're encouraged to eliminate immediately.
The Rosary offers a different kind of practice. It gives us somewhere to put our attention when the world is asking for more of it.
This doesn't mean every moment spent on a phone is wasted. But it is worth asking what our habits are doing to us. Are we becoming better at paying attention, or simply better at being distracted?
The battle for our attention is happening in ordinary moments. Sometimes it comes down to what we reach for when we have five minutes to spare.
A phone is within reach. So is a Rosary.
