A spirit of reverence, joy, and gratitude filled San Roque Chapel in Maasin as the Virgen De la Medalla Milagrosa Parish (VMMP) catechists successfully prepared and celebrated the First Holy Communion Mass of the pupils of Maasin Elementary School for School Year 2025โ€“2026.

Before the Eucharistic celebration, the young first communicants were gently guided into the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where they made their first confession with Fr. Felipe Matias and Fr. Pierre. With childlike sincerity and quiet anticipation, the pupils approached the confessional, learning early that Godโ€™s mercy comes before His banquet of love.

Afterward, the pupils proceeded to San Roque Chapel, their faces reflecting a mix of excitement, solemnity, and awe. The Holy Mass was presided over by Fr. Pierre, who warmly led the children into this sacred milestone of their faith journey.

As the moment of First Holy Communion arrived, the chapel seemed to hold its breath. The children, neatly dressed and prayerfully composed, approached the altar one by one. In their eyes was a profound wonderโ€”some shy, some radiant with smiles, others visibly movedโ€”each heart aware, in its own innocent way, that they were receiving Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time. It was a moment of quiet grace, where heaven felt especially close, and faith took deeper root in young souls.

The catechists of VMMP and the teachers of Maasin Elementary School looked on with hearts full of joy and pride. Months of patient teaching, prayer, and guidance had borne fruit. Their smiles and teary eyes spoke volumesโ€”this was not just a school activity, but a sacred mission fulfilled.

After the Mass, fellowship continued as Sister Estrella, one of the devoted catechists, graciously hosted a brunch for the priests and fellow catechists. The gathering was marked by laughter, thanksgiving, and shared storiesโ€”an expression of the strong spirit of community and service that defines the parishโ€™s catechetical ministry.

The celebration stood as a beautiful reminder that through dedication, faith, and love, the Church continues to nurture young heartsโ€”leading them, step by step, closer to Christ in the Eucharist.

Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa Parish welcomed the New Year with a solemn and grace-filled Eucharistic celebration on the evening of December 31, as a large number of parishioners gathered to give thanks to God for the year that has passed and to seek His guidance and blessing for 2026.

The celebration opened the year with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. In his address to the assembly, the presider reminded the faithful that just as a mother is the first to touch and shape our lives, so the Church begins the year by placing the journey of Godโ€™s people under the loving gaze of Mary. As Mother of God and our Mother, Mary gathers her children in Jesus Christ and leads them closer to her Son. The faithful were invited to entrust to her their hopes and fears, joys and sorrows, as they step into a new year of faith and mission.

The Mass also marked the 59th World Day of Prayer for Peace, with the theme given by the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV:
โ€œPeace Be With You All: Toward an Unarmed and Disarming Peace.โ€
The parish joined the universal Church in praying that the Savior of the world may bless all humanity with the precious gift of peace, especially in a world wounded by violence, division, and fear.

The liturgy was described by many as deeply prayerful and beautiful, made more meaningful by the inspiring hymns of the choir and the well-prepared rites that reflected the solemnity of the occasion. Before the final blessing, the entire congregation stood in unity to sing the Salve Regina, entrusting the coming year to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As the parish stepped into 2026, the New Yearโ€™s Eve Mass became a powerful moment of gratitude, hope, and renewed trust in Godโ€”guided by Mary, Mother of God, and strengthened by the shared prayer of the community.

The Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa Parish (VMMP) joyfully welcomed Christmas through three deeply moving Christmas Eve Masses celebrated across its barangays, drawing jampacked crowds and beautifully reflecting the true spirit of Christmas in the Philippinesโ€”faith-filled, communal, and overflowing with joy.

The first Christmas Eve Mass was held at San Roque Chapel in Barangay Anolid. As early as the evening, the faithful flocked to the elementary school gym in great numbers. The crowd could not contain the chapelโ€™s capacity, prompting the Barangay Pastoral Council to transfer the celebration to the Anolid Elementary School gymnasium. Despite the change of venue, the atmosphere remained solemn and joyful. Families, elders, youth, and children gathered as one community, celebrating the birth of Christ with reverence and enthusiasm.

The second Mass took place at San Roque Chapel in Barangay Maasin, presided over by Bishop Jesus Cabrera. The celebration drew an overwhelming number of faithful, filling not only the chapel but also the surrounding streets. People stood patiently, some bringing stools and others simply standing for hours, united by their desire to celebrate the Lordโ€™s Nativity. The sight of the packed chapel and overflowing streets testified to the strong faith and devotion of the people, turning the entire barangay into a living church on Christmas Eve.

The third and final Christmas Eve Mass was celebrated at the main parish church in Barangay Malabago, where a powerful and unforgettable liturgical moment left the congregation in awe. After the Christmas message of Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas was solemnly read from the pulpit, the parish choir began singing โ€œMunting Sanggol.โ€ As the church lights were slowly dimmed, a single star shone brightly, guiding a newly married couple Albert and Kryss tenderly cradling the image of the Infant Jesus. In silence and reverence, they walked toward the Nativity scene, led only by the starโ€™s light. The song ended at the exact moment the Infant Jesus was gently placed in the mangerโ€”a perfect timing that moved the congregation and drew heartfelt quiet applause and quiet tears. Many described the moment as a powerful reminder of what Christmas is truly about: Christ humbly entering our lives.

Following the Mass, the traditional Pahalik kay Niรฑo Jesus took place, beginning with the altar servers and followed by the faithful. The liturgy concluded with picture-taking around the Nativity scene, after the final blessing as families joyfully captured memories of the sacred night.

As the celebration ended, the people went home smiling and fulfilled, eager to gather with their families for Noche Buenaโ€”carrying with them the joy, peace, and hope of Christmas.

Indeed, this is Christmas in the Philippines: churches filled to the brim, streets transformed into sacred spaces, faith expressed through song and symbol, and families united in love. It is a celebration where liturgy and life meet, where joy is shared, and where the birth of Christ is not only remembered but deeply felt in the hearts of the people.

Misa de Gallo is more than a Christmas preparation mass. It began as a practical solution for Filipino farmers during Spanish times and evolved into a powerful tradition of faith, sacrifice, and communityโ€”found only in the Philippines
The first half of the Misa de Gallo at Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa Parish (VMMP) has become an anticipated Christmas celebration for many parishioners, marked not only by prayerful dawn liturgies but also by a strong sense of community and shared service.

The nine-day novena began in the spirit of the National Youth Day, setting a tone of vitality and hope that carried through the succeeding days. Since then, the Barangay Council of Malabago under the leadership of Kapitana Myla has generously provided sumptuous arroz caldo after each Mass, warmly nourishing parishioners who faithfully attend the early morning celebrations.

Presiding over the novena Masses are the esteemed โ€œAnak Nen Tomas,โ€ priests from Mangaldan composed of Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Alaminos and first parish priest of VMMP, Bishop Jesus Cabrera, internationally acclaimed speaker Fr. Allan Morris T. Abuan; and the present parish priest, Fr. Jerry. Their inspired homilies and catechesis have deeply enriched the spiritual journey of the faithful throughout the novena.

The growing number of attendees has filled not only the church pews but even exceeded seating capacity. In response, the Barangay Council of Malabago provided additional monoblock chairs to accommodate everyone, ensuring comfort and order during the liturgies. The smooth flow of the first half of the nine-day celebrations is a proof to the collaborative efforts of all parish ministries, under the guidance of Sr. Ester de Guzman, moderator of the Parish Pastoral Council.

Further strengthening the celebrations, the barangay also supplied a backup sound system, with Kapitana Myla Muyargas generously allowing the use of barangay equipment for this significant seasonal event.

Yet beyond the food, logistics, and well-organized liturgies, the most profound moment happens quietly: parishioners attentively listening, reflecting, and internalizing the homilies. They return home not only physically nourished, but more importantly, spiritually uplifted.

As Christmas approaches, VMMP is reminded that the true challenge comes after the season endsโ€”to live out the message of the Misa de Gallo daily. Indeed, as the song beautifully reminds us, โ€œAt magbuhat ngayon, kahit hindi Pasko ay magbigayan.โ€
