August 22 | Feast of Our Lady Queen of the Visayas
Nuestra Señora, Reina de las Visayas

In 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be celebrated on May 31. In 1969, Pope Paul VI transferred the feast to August 22, making it a memorial during the octave of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1996, the Visayas Region Pastoral Assembly voted unanimously to celebrate the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the entire Visayas. The feast chosen was the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1997, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines confirmed the request of the Bishops of the Visayas. In the same year, Pope John Paul II granted the indult for the Visayas to Celebrate August 22 as a Patronal Feast and added the title: "Our Lady, Queen of the Visayas" to the feast.

The regal image of Nuestra Señora, Reina de las Visayas is a de tallado image of the Blessed Mother, patterned after the Immaculate Conception. She wears a white robe with a gold cloak, her long hair flowing loose, and stands on a cloud base with cherubs. Her hands are in prayer, while a scepter rests in her arm. She is crowned and adorned with estrellas on her head—the traditional iconography of her queenship.

OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF FATIMA
August 19 - Fourth Apparition

On August 13, the day the fourth apparition was to take place, the seers were not at Cova da Iria. Our Lady had certainly come, but she had not found the seers.

On August 19, at about four o'clock in the afternoon, Lucia was with Francisco and another cousin at Valinhos when the atmospheric changes that preceded the apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria began to occur. Lucia sent for Jacinta, who arrived in time to see Our Lady appear – heralded as before by a bright light – over a holm oak slightly larger than the one at Cova da Iria.

"I want you to continue to go to Cova da Iria on the thirteenth of each month and to continue to pray the Rosary every day. On the last month, I will perform the miracle for all to believe." (19 August 1917)

"Have two portable stands made. You and Jacinta with two other girls dressed in white carry one of them, and let Francisco carry the other one with three other boys. The portable stands are for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The money that is left over should be contributed to the chapel that they shall build." (19 August 1917)

On this Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are also celebrating the 69th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Miraculous Medal Apostolate Philippines.

It was established by the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers on August 15, 1957 to promote the devotion to the Immaculate Virgin Mary through the Miraculous Medal and to support the formation of the Vincentian Seminarians.

A SACRED GIFT OF FAITH
St. Josemaría Escrivá at NSSJ

On this blessed day, 15 August 2026, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the National Shrine of St. Joseph joyfully and solemnly received a precious addition to its treasury of sacred relics: the Relic of St. Josemaría Escrivá, together with his image - our 27th Relic in Custody. 🙏🏻

St. Josemaría Escrivá (1902–1975), priest and founder of Opus Dei, dedicated his life to reminding Christians that holiness can be lived in the midst of ordinary life - through our work, family responsibilities, friendships, and daily duties, all offered lovingly to God.

His spiritual message has a beautiful connection with St. Joseph, the humble worker and faithful guardian of Jesus and Mary. St. Joseph teaches us the sanctity of ordinary work, silent service, responsibility, and fidelity to God’s will. In a similar spirit, St. Josemaría encouraged the faithful to seek God and sanctification precisely in the ordinary circumstances of everyday life. Thus, the presence of his relic at our Shrine offers a meaningful spiritual reminder: our daily lives and work can become a path toward holiness when lived with love for God.

We express our profound gratitude to the Opus Dei for entrusting the National Shrine of St. Joseph with this sacred gift. May this relic serve not merely as an object of veneration, but as a tangible reminder of the communion of saints and an invitation to follow Christ more faithfully.

For the faithful of Mandaue and all pilgrims who come to our Shrine, may this sacred occasion deepen our prayer, strengthen our devotion, and inspire us to discover God in the ordinary moments of our lives. May St. Josemaría’s example, together with the witness of St. Joseph, encourage us to transform our homes, workplaces, families, and communities into places where God’s love is lived and shared.

Today, the Association of the Miraculous Medal joins the Church in celebrating the glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, body and soul, into Heaven.

Mary, the humble servant of God and Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, is a sign of hope and a model of faithful discipleship. Her Assumption reminds us that those who faithfully follow Christ are called to share in His glory.

As we continue our journey toward the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, may Mary, our Mother and Queen, lead us ever closer to her Son and teach us to say with faith and trust: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”

Let us pray,
Almighty ever-living God,
who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son,
body and soul into heavenly glory,
grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above,
we may merit to be sharers of her glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

Mary, Queen assumed into heaven, I rejoice that after years of heroic martyrdom on earth, you have at last been taken to the throne prepared for you in heaven by the Holy Trinity.

Lift my heart with you in the glory of your Assumption above the dreadful touch of sin and impurity. Teach me how small earth becomes when viewed from heaven. Make me realize that death is the triumphant gate through which I shall pass to your Son, and that someday my body shall rejoin my soul in the unending bliss of heaven. From this earth, over which I tread as a pilgrim, I look to you for help. I ask for this favor (mention your request).
