Jl 2:12-18
2Cor 5:20--6:2
Mt 6:1-6, 16-18
A little girl was toying with a small, colorful snake, not knowing how deadly it was.
Her elder brother saw the danger and quickly snatched her away, saving her life.
But the snake bit him!
As he lay dying, the girl cried beside her brother.
With his last breath, he said, "It's all right, little sis.
Just make sure your life was worth saving."
Today is Ash Wednesday, start of the Season of Lent when we remember our older brother Jesus' sacrificial death for us, and check our lives to see if He had not died in vain.
Today, we have our forehead marked with ash to remind us that from ash we were created and to ash we will return - and baked ash in hell we will remain if we go back to playing with the snake.
Lent calls us to
- Almsgiving, to remind us of our duty to love.
- Prayer, to renew our relationship with God.
- Fasting (age 18-59) and abstinence from meat (14 up) to remind us that we do not live by meat alone but by the Word of God, the Bible.
Let us ask Jesus for a life-changing Lent.
