The Assumption is an important feast in the Franciscan Order. On this day, we celebrate Mary who was taken body and soul into heaven since she is Immaculate. This event in the life of our Blessed Mother shows the redemption God has willed for humanity, and the glorious union that awaits us when we meet Sister Death in a state of grace. When Pope Pius XII declared this dogma in 1950, he referred to three Franciscan saints who defended it: Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Bonaventure, and Saint Bernardine of Siena. In fact, several Franciscan congresses on the Assumption were said to be influential to its declaration as the fourth Marian dogma 76 years ago.

Every 11th of August, we celebrate our Seraphic Mother Saint Clare of Assisi, founder of the Second Order, called the Poor Ladies.

Clare was drawn to the Gospel life of Saint Francis at an early age. She was secretly dedicated to God and renounced her wealth and status, then became the founder of the Poor Ladies (now known as the "Poor Clares.") Among the many stories attributed to her life, she is known for her love for the Eucharist. In one occasion, she held up the Blessed Sacrament against the defeated Saracen mercenaries who intended to attack the monastery. Whenever Saint Clare was sick, she is said to be able to assist at Mass while it was being miraculously projected in her room. Because of this, Pope Pius XII declared her as patron of the television in 1958. In the Philippine tradition, many would offer eggs in the Monasteries of the Poor Clares to ask for clear weather, owing to their clear white shell (clara) which resounded the saint's name. This same attribute was highlighted in the Papal Bull canonizing her: "Clare outstandingly clear with clear merits, in Heaven with the clarity of great glory, and on Earth with the splendor of sublime miracles, is clearly clear." (Clara claris praeclara, 1255.)

Our holy Mother Saint Clare, pray for us!

Every year, a special grace of pardon is dispensed to all the faithful, owing to an apparition to Saint Francis in 1216 in the chapel called "PORTIUNCULA" or "the little portion". Shortly after, Pope Honorius III granted this indulgence to Saint Francis. First known as the "Pardon of Assisi," this grace has been extended outside the church of the Portiuncula itself and is celebrated in the Franciscan Calendar through the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels.

To this day, the Church grants a Plenary Indulgence to all those who visit a church under the Franciscan Order or any parish church and fulfills the usual conditions (i.e. confession, communion, prayer for the Pope's intentions, and detachment from sin.) This grace is conceded from the noon of August 1 until midnight of August 2. This Indulgence fulfills what we owe to God after our contrition and penance from our sins. It may be applied to ourselves or to a soul in Purgatory.
