Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska was born on August 25, 1905, in Poland. The third of ten children in a poor, devout family, she felt a religious calling from an early age, persevering despite her parents' opposition. She joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy on August 1, 1925, adopting the name Sister Maria Faustina.
Faustina worked in various roles within her congregation, including cook and porter, while keeping her mystical experiences private. In 1931, she began receiving visions and conversations with Jesus, revealing the importance of Divine Mercy, which became central to her spirituality.
Through her writings and instructions, including a Novena to Divine Mercy, she spread the devotion widely, especially during World War II. Despite challenges, including skepticism from some authorities, her message gained recognition, culminating in Pope Pius XII blessing an image of Divine Mercy in 1956. Sister Faustina died on October 5, 1938, likely from tuberculosis.
Her canonization process began in 1965, and she was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, solidifying her role as a key figure in promoting the devotion to Divine Mercy in the Catholic Church.
