AUGUST 24, 2026 | FEAST OF SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE
Saint Bartholomew, traditionally identified with Nathanael mentioned in the Gospel of John, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus. Hailing from Cana in Galilee, he was brought to Jesus by the Apostle Philip. Upon meeting Him, Jesus famously commended him as an Israelite without duplicity, declaring, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no guile in him” (John 1:47).
Following the Ascension of Christ and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Saint Bartholomew dedicated his life to fearlessly preaching the Gospel across distant lands. Ancient church traditions record that he traveled and brought the Christian faith to regions such as Mesopotamia, Persia, India and Armenia.
His missionary zeal ultimately led to his martyrdom. According to tradition, he was flayed alive and beheaded for refusing to renounce Christ, making him a powerful symbol of steadfast faith and ultimate sacrifice. Because of the instrument of his martyrdom, he is often depicted holding a flaying knife in sacred art. His feast day is celebrated on August 24.
