𝐒𝐭. 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐙𝐡𝐚𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐠: 𝐀 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐭

During the 17th century where Christianity was widely persecuted in China, a group of lay missionaries and priest was captured and taken into custody, St Augustine Zhao-Rong, who was then known as Sergeant Zhu Rong led the arrest and was sent to accompany the captured faithful to their ex*****on in Beijing.

This is where the story of a soldier would turn into something only God can turn 360 degrees.

Zhu Rong accompanied the group led by a priest named Fr. Mei, during the journey he heard Fr. Mei’s preaching and saw their courage and faith amidst the sufferings they are experiencing and the eminent death they are about to face. He was drawn to it leading him to embrace Christianity, even at the height of Christian Persecution. Zhu Rong firmly stood for his faith and decided to be baptized, he was then baptized by Fr. Mei on the feast day of St. Augustine taking the name of Augustine Zhu Rong.

As they arrived in Beijing, Fr. Mei and his companions were executed on the grounds of their faith but these turns of events led to a greater purpose. There death opened the path for a new generation of faithful servant of God.
Augustine Zhu Rong, fully embraced his Catholic faith and lived it out through preaching and witnessing leading many local Chinese to the Catholic faith. He left his duties as a soldier and followed the path of Jesus Christ – Discipleship. Another priest, impressed by is faith, loyalty and enthusiasm in serving, recognized his deep devotion and love for Jesus Christ and the church appealed to the Bishop for his Priestly ordination which was later on granted. He then adopted the last name Zhao, which he has lived to be known Augustine Zhao Rong.

As Christian persecution dropped he openly pronounced his faith and served in the many provinces of China and made known Christ to all he has met. But in 1815, during the reign of the Jia Qing, Christian persecution began again. Fr. Augustine Zhao Rong was unable to escapee and was later on captured, detained and made to renounce his faith. He remained steadfast in his prayer, courageous amidst the persecution and persevering in suffering as he faces the ridicule and torture of the soldiers. As he awaits judgement for not renouncing Christ, he died in prison of old age unable to endure bodily punishment.

Fr. Augustine Zhao Rong was beatified by Pope Leo XII on May 27, 1900 and was later on canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000 alongside 120 other Chinese martyrs.

May St. Augustine Zhao Rong’s conversion remind us that it is never too late, for Christ works even in the ugliest phases of our lives. May we find the courage to listen and to take one step towards Christ as the then soldier did and we too are called – a life in Christ and with Christ.
