Saint Simon Stock was a holy Carmelite priest born in England around the 12th century. According to tradition, he lived a life of prayer and penance from a young age, even spending time in solitude inside the hollow trunk of a tree, which is believed to be the origin of his surname β€œStock.” He later joined the Carmelite Order and became known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his leadership in strengthening the Carmelite community throughout Europe.

Saint Simon Stock is best remembered for his strong connection to the Brown Scapular devotion. Tradition says that on July 16, 1251, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and gave him the Brown Scapular as a sign of protection and salvation for those who wear it faithfully. Because of this, he became one of the most beloved saints in the Carmelite tradition. His life continues to inspire many Catholics to live with humility, prayer, and devotion to Mary.

On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children named Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta in Fatima, Portugal. She delivered a message calling for prayer, repentance, and sacrifice for the conversion of sinners. Our Lady strongly emphasized the daily praying of the Holy Rosary as a powerful devotion for peace in the world. She also warned against sin and encouraged a return to God with sincere hearts. These apparitions became a powerful reminder of Mary’s role as our loving Mother and intercessor.

The apparitions continued for six consecutive months, with increasing attention from both the faithful and the curious. On October 13, 1917, a great miracle known as the Miracle of the Sun was witnessed by thousands of people. The sun appeared to dance, spin, and change colors in the sky, confirming the truth of Our Lady’s message. During this final apparition, Mary revealed herself as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This revealed her deep connection to devotion and protection for all who follow her Son.

In this final message, Our Lady presented the Brown Scapular as a sign of consecration and devotion. The Brown Scapular is a sacramental that symbolizes Mary’s protection and a commitment to live a faithful Christian life. Those who wear it are reminded to imitate Mary’s virtues of humility, purity, and obedience to God. It also calls the faithful to constant prayer and trust in God’s mercy. Through the Brown Scapular and devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, we are invited to grow closer to Christ under Mary’s loving care.

PRAYER
O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the most holy Rosary, you were pleased to appear to the children of Fatima and reveal a glorious message. We implore you, inspire in our hearts a fervent love for the recitation of the Rosary. By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption that are recalled therein may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask, through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for us!

From different parts of Asia, Lay Carmelites gather as one community to deepen their faith, strengthen their identity, and renew their mission of service. United in spirit and devotion, this congress becomes a sacred space for encounter, formation, and shared journey in the Carmelite way of life.

Join us at the Lay Carmelite Asian Congress 2026 in Cebu from April 29 to May 3, 2026, as we reflect on the theme: β€œSee, I am doing something new.” (Isaiah 43:19). Through prayer, dialogue, and fellowship, may we discover how God continues to move and work in our lives today.

May this gathering inspire a renewed commitment to our vocation, strengthen our unity as one Carmelite family, and lead us toward a deeper encounter with God. Together, let us embrace the newness of His grace and carry it into our communities with love and service.

A Blessed Easter to the Carmelite Family
As we celebrate the glorious Resurrection of our Lord, may the light of the Risen Christ illuminate the hearts of every member of the Third Order of Carmelites, the wider Carmelite Family, and all the faithful. Just as our journey through the desert of Lent has led us to the empty tomb, may this Easter season renew your commitment to a life of prayer, community, and service. In the spirit of the prophet Elijah and the silence of Mary, let us rejoice in the triumph of life over death, finding in the Resurrection the ultimate source of our hope and the strength to witness to God's love in our daily lives.

May the joy of the Risen Lord be your constant companion, transforming your trials into triumphs and your sorrows into songs of praise. As Carmelites, we are called to be "gardeners" of the soul; let the grace of this Easter Sunday water the seeds of faith within you, blossoming into works of mercy and a deeper union with the Divine. We stand together in the radiance of the Paschal mystery, united in the prayer that the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds. Alleluia! Christ is risen indeed!
