βIf anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.β
In Mark 9:30-37, we encounter a profound moment where Jesus teaches His disciples about the true nature of greatness. After predicting His passion, He highlights that the path to greatness is not found in power or status, but in humility and service. When the disciples argue about who is the greatest, Jesus gently corrects them by placing a child in their midst, emphasizing that to receive a child is to welcome Him.
This passage challenges us to reflect on our own ambitions and priorities. In a culture that often values success and recognition, Jesus invites us to shift our focus toward serving others. The image of a child symbolizes openness, trust, and vulnerabilityβqualities we are called to embody in our relationships.
As Catholics, we are reminded that our journey of faith is deeply intertwined with our call to serve. True discipleship means putting aside our ego and embracing humility. By welcoming the least among us, we not only reflect Christβs love but also grow in our understanding of His kingdom. In serving others, we find our true purpose and become instruments of His peace and compassion in the world.
